Don't know if I should start a new post, or look for the one from a few days ago (I know google groups bounces the old post to the top when answered, but the newsgroup format doesn't)
Anyway, I had a funny "stuck" noise and got the blue screen error (fault in Intel c52.sys) and after I asked this and read an answer, I could no longer get online again (I want a backup computer, so I can go online and look things up, yell HELP, download drivers, etc!)
I didn't get a WIN XP restore cd with my Dell XPS 400 computer ( 2 1/2 years old) It says the files are built in. But, when I'd try system restore (going back a month or more) it said it couldn't restore it. I guess that's another topic.
I felt so lost without the internet when I ask questions and find answers.
My grandson had once given me a modem (he had wireless/router and didn't need it)I put that in (remembering someone here, before I lost the internet said I might need a modem) but it wouldn't set up with the drivers in it. (NOTE: if someone gives you a modem download a driver for it BEFORE you might need it (LOL) Yesterday my grandson (like most young people knows a lot about computers, I think kids are being born knowing more now) got the name/numbers from me and downloaded a driver onto a cd, and put the modem in and it works!
Apparently (he said, or guessed) the error in Intel c52.sys was the other modem driver (Intel modem that had come in it)
Over the weekend, while trying to resolve this, I called about some low priced towers for sale, thinking if I could get something, I could go online and find answers. One man said the low priced tower he advertised had been sold, but offered to look at my computer and tell me what's wrong for $35 or fix it for me (he said it sounded like the system files were corrupt and he might have to reinstal Win XP) for $175.
I'm a low income (age 65) grandma, and have always fixed my own computers (with help) IF they were still fixable. I got so I knew WIN 98 pretty good and even some dos (I missed the dos age)
I really want to learn all I can about things like this, not that computer repair people rip you off, but paying to h ave them fixed seems to be costly. And, like with me, I ended up getting it back working for free.
Just a matter of knowing.
I wanted to put the update on here for anyone who might be searching for answers in the future.
Except for the person who said I might need another modem on this group (THANKS!) my previous online searches about the error fault in Intel c52.sys had mainly come up with other people getting it and asking for answers, and nothing as simple as "you need a new modem". More like reinstaling Win XP, etc. My grandson said he put it in search and found a place saying it was clashing with the video card and to replace that. But, like the person who told me here, he figured the first thing would be try another modem. Since that's where the problem (and blue screen) was showing up.
Though clashing with a video card might also be true, in some cases.
Hopefully, mine will stay working now.
And, because of the problem I found this newsgroup (I knew about the microsoft newsgroups, have mainly been on the Publisher one). And, I already realize just reading here I can learn a lot.
Thanks,
Carrie
