I'm having trouble with a system I recently set up and just trying to
eliminate things. Did a clean install of XP Pro w/SP2, then I have a
downloaded file of SP3 (316M) burned on a CD and I ran that. Lots of
quirky problems, Explorer problems, Office problems. I'm just going to
start from scratch. But am I right that getting SP3 from Windows
Update, or running that file (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe)
doesn't make any difference?
The other possible issue is AHCI. Very briefly, the system came with
Vista, AHCI enabled. It would blue screen when I tried to boot XP
install CD. I could switch to ATA mode but there was a driver
available. A dell system, driver specific to this system. A version of
the Intel Matrix Storage driver specifically for pre-os or F6 use. I
used nLite to add it to a copy of the XP CD and it installed just
fine. Really doubt that's a problem. If it was it would probably not
have gotten as far as it has or I would be having disk read/write
errors.
Thanks
