We are looking to build a server to last at least 7 years. Our company
employees 31 people in 3 office. We are looking to establish a VPN between
the main office and the other two. One of our goals is to have servers in
each office with the same drive mapping. The exchange mail is shared
between offices. I would appreciate any input on the server configuration
which is as follows:

MS Windows SVR 2008 64bit std 5u cal operating system
Liteon 20x DVDRW IDE Black BUL NO SW # DH-20A4P Optical drive
Nero 8.3 MPEG2
Intel XEON E5420 2.5 GHz 12mb 1333 MHz BX80574E5420P PAS. HS Processors
Intel AXX6DRV3G 6-Bay SAS/SATA HS CAGE w/o Exp. SC5299/5400 Server Chassis
Intel SC5400BRPNA 830W (1+0) Hotswap Redundant

I have found that one common reason we have to rebuild servers is because
there is not enough space on the C drive after the Service packs and updates
over the years.
One thing you can do is create a C drive large enough to hold the system
files, for 7 years, probably 5 or 6 Service packs and at least the critical
updates. Maybe go with 20 to 30 GB free over and above the system install.

Danny,
Thank you for the reply. The information on additional space for the C
drive was a helpful suggestion. I had forgot to account for that. Our
company utilizes software that is very demanding, Autodesk and Bentley
products, along with large files, up to 1.4 gb. Do you have any suggestions
on the server specs that would help speed up network access?

If you want this thing to last for a while I would suggest getting Dual 3.2
GHz Xeon processors and get at least 8 GB RAM.

If it's over kill for now you can count on more and more services getting
added to it over the years.

You have been very helpful. I want to beef up the server as much as
possible now, before presenting cost to VP.
