Windows installer service not working

Windows XP x64: The problem started 2 days after a new system install. After
installing some programs and numerous updates. BOOM!!! The windows installer
was not working even though the service appeared to be running. Followed the
advise at MS KB and eventually tried re-installing installer. It is now not
even showing up under Services. I can not install any programs and even one
critical Windows update will not install. Appreciate any help.

and this is the installer you should be downloading:
WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x64.exe
