Bold text disappearing in RDS to Win 2k3 server

Hi, We have a site with a Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) terminal server, and a
Windows 2003 SBS (SP2) server running Exchange.

There are 15 users on the terminal server, some of them working off PCs,
some off laptops. There are three laptop users who have been having regular
problems with their session. At a random point (for no apparent reaon - there
are no regular errors appearing in the event logs on either server or the
laptops) all the bold text in the session disappears.

This includes the titles off the open windows, all the bold text within
Outlook (titles of new e-mails, any folder titles which have unread e-mails,
etc), the start button (the start button frequently stretches to the entire
width of the session window when this happens, although it remains usable)
and the start menu.

This has been going on for motnhs. We have a matching sister site, with more
users, but this site doesn't have the problem.

Until yesterday, we hadn't been able to cause the problem at our end. I had
to recreate a profile for one of the (previously) unaffected users -I gave
him a new profile path - and on the very first login to configure the
account, start bar had extended, no bold text in Start menu, etc. The full
works.

This means we've finally eliminated the laptops as the cause of the issue (I
was in a terminal session from our own server at a third site - also a 2k3
server, but we support about 10 sites in total and this is the only time this
has ever happened)

We've recreated profiles for the affected users before, but if it hits a
brand new profile, there isn't much point in me doing that.

We do NOT want to reinstall either of the servers.

Any ideas/ suggestions would be appreciated. I've been trawling the web for
a while now, and I've found nothing.

Weird! I've heard of similar problems (everything displayed in
italics) after installing the Office Viewer IE plugin on a TS.
This is most likely a problem with the fonts on your TS. Compare
the installed fonts with a working TS or other server to see if any
of them is missing.

Re: Bold text disappearing in RDS to Win 2k3 server

I don't think that's the issue - I checked against the sister site mentioned
about. This one has a few extra fonts, but it's not missing any. I haven't
checked if it's a corrupt font, yet - but I'll get on that now.

Thanks for the idea :)

Re: Bold text disappearing in RDS to Win 2k3 server

It turns out a third party piece of software had overwritten the system fonts.

Thanks for your help :)

3rd party applications are a nuissance, aren't they :-)
I'm glad that the problem is solved, and thanks for reporting back

Doesn't it make you wonder "WTH were they thinking????" why would you
overwrite system anything nowadays.
