Winxp3, at bootup and after the "loading personal settings" is done, there
is a 1 minute and 45 second blank screen before the desktop appears. What
is the best way to find (log) what process is causing this delay? Starting
in safe mode there is only a 8-10 second delay (normal??)

Re: Start up delay

Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot ...
(the 'Boot Execute' tab),
when you logon (the 'Logon' tab) and other programs that load
(grouped by labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop
(use with care) any program that you don't want to load.
You can undo any changes you have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you can't
readily identify you may need to highlight the item (right click) and use
the 'Search Online' option to get the details,
especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Re: Start up delay

What errors appear in Event Viewer? You need to post only copies of
Warnings and Errors from the last boot
in normal mode.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Most likely, your icon cache is corrupt, you can rebuild it either
automatically by installing Iconoid or manually using TweakUI
(install, open, under "Repair" select "Rebuild Icons" and click
the "Repair Now" button.

Re: Start up delay

You're welcome.

It's a powerful tool so use with care.
Research what you want to stop from loading
as killing/stopping the wrong one could make
for a grand headache.

Re: Start up delay

Tx for the suggestion on Icon rebuild. I used TweakUI, did the rebuild, but
got the same results

Re: Start up delay

Too bad, that was an easy fix.

You'll need to enable boot logging and examine the
C:\WINDOWS\ntbtlog.txt file.
