Since I installed SP3 on my Windows XP SP2 desktop, I've been seeing
intermittent and ANNOYING slowdowns of my computer. I'll click a link on IE,
or select a menu item from a program, and the mouse cursor will turn to an
hourglass while my computer slows.

Sysinternal's Process Explorer shows me instances of the program
VERCLSID.EXE popping up, slowing my computer. I don't where the hell this
program came from - I think it's from SP3 - but it's annoying the living
hell out of me.

NO, I did NOT install KB908531, this must be a part of SP3. How do I stop
this damned program? Do I need to uninstall SP3???

A Google Groups search netted this:

Re: Since SP3, verclsid.exe slowing my computer

KB908531 is included in SP3; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any; e.g., Outpost)? Were any of these applications running in the
background when you installed WinXP SP3?

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015:

No, at least not yet. But your machine must be running WinXP SP3 by April
2010 in order to be offered any further Windows Updates.

I'd seen that already - none of the suggestions apply to me (I don't have HP
share-to-web installed, I don't have an NVIDA card, etc)

If there's a solution there, I absolutely do not see it. I see people asking
the same question as me and getting no answer - like me.

That sucks.

SystemSuite 7 (w/ TrendMicro antivirus), Spybot, Outpost v4.0.

During SP3 install, SystemSuite 7 was disabled. Spybot & Outpost were
running.

Seen it, it doesn't apply. I asked here because a web search came up with
zip zero nada.

Re: Since SP3, verclsid.exe slowing my computer

SystemSuite includes a firewall: You're running Outpost firewall, too?
(Only one firewall should be enabled at any given time.)

See if this behavior persists after disabling any/all third-party firewalls
and then enabling the Windows Firewall.

[I had another thread recently about VERCLSID.EXE & KB908531 where the
poster was running Outpost firewall. I can't find the thread right now but
IIRC he fixed the issue by tweaking an Outpost setting.]

No, the only firewall running is Outpost. I never installed the SystemSuite
firewall during the initial install.

Ah HA, Watson!

Re: Since SP3, verclsid.exe slowing my computer

We'd appreciate your feedback on this, Victor. Does disabling all
third-party firewalls and then enabling the Windows Firewall have any affect
on the behavior?
