Is there any reason not to remove the update.exe that appears in the Update
folder in each of the folders in $hf_mig$? I understand the purpose of the
folder, but I see no reason Update.exe needs to be there. Ditto for
spuninst.exe. Update.exe is 700KB and spuninst.exe is 166KB. Since they
exist in each of the 120+ folders in $hf_mig$, they account for over 100MB.

Also, now that SP3 is installed, is it necessary to retain those files in
$hf_mig$ that predate SP3?

Thanks for the help.

Re: $hf_mig$ Contents: update.exe and spunist.exe

I've noticed this also an it is my belief that update.exe is never used
again
for the particular KBxxxxxx that it was use for when updating/installing a
security patch, however I have no way to verify this. 100MB is a small
amount of disk space. See more on cleaning up you disk below.

Should you delete $hf_mig$ after installing SP3? .....NO!
You would need to verify that every folder in $hf_mig$ has no
impact on a PC recently updated to SP3.
Case in point KB951748
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951748

You can read my article titled:
"Is it safe to delete the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ folders"
http://www.pagestart.com/ntuninstall.html

If you really want to get some disk space back look
for a folder named "cf8ec753e88561d2ddb53e183dc05c3e"
It's more than 600MB in size and is the remnants of installing
SP3 from the Windows Update site.
This oddly named folder is located in the path
C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\
This folder and any other folders and files in the download folder

can be deleted.
