I have W-98 in my secondary PC. However, W-98 does not support recent jump
(pen) drives, thus I am plannig upgrade to Wxp. Have boxed Wxp upgrade
version but instructions indicate that the upgrade will "replace" previous
OS. I have several important W-98 program that will like to keep, but
they will not work properly under Wxp. Thus, will like to keep W-98 as an
alternative OS. Q: How can I installe Wxp and keep W-98 to be used when
needed??

Have you tried the Maximus Decim driver set:

Install XP on a second partition and dual boot

I use this program and it works great. Just plug in any USB device
and it works.

The link provided above does NOT have the download on their site.
Clicking on the link does nothing. I tried in both Firefox and IE.
Maybe their site is having technical issues, or?????

Maybe someone else knows another download site for this file.

WinXP has a special "compatibility" feature designed
to make earlier apps (Win3.1 or Win95 or Win98) run
under XP. Each app can be thus configured via
/ Properties. This system is not guaranteed but worth
testing in your situation.

A cheap alternative (at $100-$150 for a used XP PC
in good order) is a network linking a Win98 to an XP
PC, also useful for backup to large-sized drives etc.

Be sure to scan all downloads for malware first.

Make two Win98 partitions.

Put your programs on both partitions.

Upgrade one of them to XP. Don't allow the XP install to mess
with the other partition unless it does so to implement a dual boot
menu.

RE: Two Operating Systems W98 / Wxp

Consider buying another hard drive to have XP on and use Windows 98 on your
primary hard drive and 98 gets installed first and XP next on the appropriate
second hard drive. I would use Fat32 file system for Windows 98 Second
Edition and NTFS file system for XP. Windows 98 Second Edition will not see
XP and that is good. Windows XP will see Windows 98 Second Edition but do
not touch Windows 98 Second Edition with Windows XP because you could mess it
up and only make any changes to Windows 98 Second Edition from within Windows
XP Professional when you have a problem with Windows 98 SE. This is the way
I roll it at least on my multi-boot computer.

How do you stop the XP install "messing with" the existing installation?

It's an upgrade - of course it will "mess" with the existing installation.

If XPs setup program is too 'ham-fisted' to install on a pre-partitioned
harddrive - use another partitioning tool. I can't do tests here anymore
because my test computers are gone now. My XP machine has an OEM
version and reloads from an EISA Configuration partition (which stomps
on any partitions I make for dual booting purposes). From my reading on
XPs setup partitioning tool - it can install XP on your choice of partition.

At the very least, you should be able to install the XP upgrade to 98
on the entire drive and then use linux or partition magic to repartition
it making room for the 98 install. I suggested having 98 already on the
other partition because I heard XPs multiboot manager is picky about
the order in which OSes are installed. LILO or GRUB should be able
to handle XP and 98 (which it will call DOS) and you could have Linux
as well for maintenance purposes.
