XP Activation

After several years of running XP on my computer, today it started telling
me that significant hardware changes require me to reactivate Windows. I
haven't changed any hardware in my
computer. This is a genuine retail version of XP Home Upgrade that I bought
when XP was released. XP Genuine Validation reports: "Windows must be
activated in order to determine if the Windows product key installed on this
computer is genuine."

My software has always been activated and valid before, so how can I fix
this? I've made no changes.

Just reactivate it

It wouldn't activate via normal methods.

I got it resolved using a tool I found to activate and validate on the
Windows Genuine Advantage site. Back to normal now.

More proof that the WGA fiasco does nothing to stop piracy and only
annoys paying customers. What happened to you, Mike, is that you got the
new WGAN from Windows update that incorrectly determined that you did
something you didn't do.

Your proof is wrong - WGA does stop piracy, I've seen it trigger in
pirated OS installs many times. I've personally never seen it trigger on
a legit install unless that machine was compromised by malware.

Paying customers are annoyed, true. Much like having to show your receipt at
the door of Best Buy or Walmart. It's the price we righteous people have to
pay to keep the thieves mostly at bay. By putting up with the aggravation,
we keep prices lower.

It's simple: You're either on the side of the honest or you're on the side
of the thieves.

Updates for the security updates. You can even get a copy of Illusion
which is a combo of W2K, XP and Vista. Want to download it right now?
Search for Illusion operating system using Google search and it's all
yours. Stop piracy my ass. It may convince some clueless user who bought
a pirated copy of XP to pay for a "genuine" one but stopping piracy?
Puhlease, pull the other one, it has bells on it.

That said, where the hell does MS get off forcing their paying customers
to: prove over and over again that they aren't thieves and force paying
customers act as cops and forcing them to help catch pirates?

If MS wants to see my receipt, they can get a court order and demand to
see it and I will show it to them. Where I buy software isn't Best Buy
or Walmart but a computer store and the man who watches me leave *gave*
me the receipt and, no, it didn't ask to see it again when I walked out.

Who covers the cost of the WGA help desks and the programmers salaries
to develop WPA and WGA, Santa Claus?

You must have failed logic. It's simple: MS has no right to force paying
customers to play cop to try and catch pirates, whom they don't catch.
They catch clueless *users* who bought a pirated copy of Windows or
Office, not the pirates.

So, the side you are on is called "screw the paying customers and get on
your high moral horse if anyone objects".

It's Microsoft's software, not yours, not mine, I just agree to use it
and abide by their rules.

WGA has not caused any problems for legit owners that have not had their
machines compromised, in my personal experience. Your constant ranting
just make you look like the group troll.

Your ill informed opinion. I am a paying customer of Microsoft XP and
