When I try to run defragmenter I get this message - error in
c:\windows\system32\config\system.log. I tried running chkdsk /f. I say yes
to run at start up. I still continue to get the same message. Any other
suggestions? Is there anyway I can tell if chkdsk actually runs at start up?

Thnak you, Dave

Re: Defragmenter problem

Usually there is a blue screen notifying you chkdsk is about to run, giving
you the option of cancelling it.
Event Viewer will have an entry under "Application" as a Winlogon entry.
This will report the results.

If you run chkdsk without parmeters are any bad sectors reported.
Have you tried in safe mode?

I've no idea where the problem lies, but would be interested in the
solution.

Isn't that file used in registry operations? If so, you have a far more
serious problem than getting dfrag to work.

If chkdsk runs at startup, you should clearly see it on your screen.
Depending on the flags you used, it will count through 3 or 5 stages.
If you aren't seeing that, then it's either not running or it's not
available to be run.

What command are you using to run at startup? It should be chkdsk /f or
/r. Go to a Command Prompt and type chkdsk /? if you want to see all
the flags available and what they do.

After it runs you might have to go to Event Viewer to see the results of
it. Chkdsk definitely takes a few minutes to run so if you watch the
boot, you cannot miss it if it's there.
