Want to reinstall windows XP using CD

Hi,

Im having lots of issues with my computer and virtually unable to
work.

Logging to windows XP (SP2, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB SATA hard disk) takes
atleast 30 minutes and that too after navigating through couple of
errors (blue screen, autochk.exe missing and so on) etc. Im not able
to run any programs after logging on (associations lost).

I have copied relevant files (my documents, favourites, personal excel
macros) from C drive to other drives in the same disk and now would
like to reinstall XP in C drive.

When I try booting through CD drive, the set-up begins and I get a
message in the bottom saying "press F6 if you need to install any
third-party or RAID drivers." and I do have a RAID driver and also the
floppy disk.

But pressing F6 nothing happens..no prompt to insert floppy
disk....rather the message skips to about loading other files etc. If
I continue to ignore this and proceed ahead then after a few minutes
it says "no attached SCSI, CD-rom drives were found" (strange because
the set-up process is happening through CD/DVD ROM
only)...When I ignored the above message it then displays a new
message saying no hard-drives were detected and it will have to quit
set-up.

How do I overcome the same? My keyboard is fine (PS2) and I even
bought a new keyboard (PS2)....and still the F6 is not being
recognized

I thought if I format C drive only ( and not the other drives) and
again try installing/booting through CD ROM I might not face this
issue...but not sure whether this would work....even if it would how
do I go to command prompt (XP does not offer the command prompt with
F10 and without CD).

Please let me know.

All I can tell you is that once you solve the CD / HD recognition issue,
you can simply delete a partition (C: Drive in your case) and remake it
and format it, all with that CD, you don't have to do this outside the
installation. You might try putting the Floppy in the drive before you
hit F6 and also wait about 10 seconds after inserting the floppy.

Where did you get the driver? They're usually available from the computer or
motherboard manufacturer's web site. The ones I've seen are an .exe file
that you need to run so that they can create a floppy disk with the drivers
for your motherboard's SATA controller. After the installation starts you
put the disk in the drive so it's available when you hit the F6 key.

If you're not sure what to do, post back with information about your
computer. Include the make and model # of the computer or motherboard.

Note: Copying your important files to another partition on the drive where
you're trying to install XP is not an effective way to back them up. They
should be copied to CD/DVDs or an external hard drive. What you've done is
risk losing them should something go wrong with the installation.

You could try to rescue your system before you try the clean installation of
WXP. The symptoms you describe are typical of a system clogged with startup
programs and spyware infections. You can disable startup programs in
Start\Run\type; "msconfig" (w/o quotes) hit Enter and go to the Startup tab
and uncheck all programs except for the antivirus (which is usually on top
of the list) and any windows process like ctfmon of Office. If you have more
than a few startup programs you should notice your system liven-up... next
install security applications and delete possible infections. Also use
CCleaner to delete Cookies, Internet Temporary Files and User&System
Temporary Files.

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Super antispyware to clean your system
from spyware and trojans.

Did you actually use RAID? If so, how?

You need to check the motherboard manual. You may need to run off AHCI
support and turn on legacy mode.

I would suggest that you stop here. The first thing you need to do is get
your data off that one physical disk onto non-RAID drives. One of the
causes for system slowness is drive failure, and this failure can cause you
to lose access to ALL partitions on that physical disk.

Some motherboards don't require SATA drivers but *do* require a BIOS
setting if SATA and PATA drives are used, and some (this one, for example)
won't accept the SATA drivers during setup but the BIOS can be set to
non-AHCI mode during install. The drive will be recognised, install
proceeds, the driver is installed later and the BIOS reset to AHCI.

Go get another large hard disk - where I am, 500 gig drives are now around
$70. Set yours aside to protect the data, install to the new one and make
it work. Once it's up and running, re-attach the old drive and copy the
data back.

And don't back up to the same disk! This is just asking for trouble. You
should be backing up data to several physically different media sets, such
as DVDs, some of which are stored offsite.
