I already have this update KB950974, what can I do?

I reinstalled XP, and began the process of updating all the security fixes,
service packs, and so on. Wupdate really has a complex job, and does a
magnificent job of managing the complexity. As I recall, auto update
installed 2 or 4 little updates, then installed SP3 (a cumulative patch, I
presume). But then came another 5 or 10 updates, among them KB950974, which
failed to install, and the .NET framework 3.0, which also failed to install.

I manually downloaded the 3.0 framework from somewhere on the MS site, and
it installed flawlessly. So that problem was solved.

But wupdate is still trying to install KB950974, which was one of the first
patches to install, and which is listed happily in the Add/Remove Programs
display. I was going to uninstall it, but apparently 20 or 30 other patches
depend on it, so I chickened out and did not uninstall it.

I read lots on the web, reregistered all my wu*.dll files, stopped and
started the wuauserv service in hopes of refreshing its database, etc. But no
cigar yet.

Will wupdate eventually figure out that I have KB950974 already installed,
or am I doomed to live with repeated failures to update? I'm hoping that an
MVP will be able to describe a general scenario where this kind of thing
happens, and how to fix it. Thanks

Look in C:\windows for a file named KB950974.log and post it here, perhaps we'll
be able to see what's happening. Have you double-checked the number and made
sure it is the same update that's failing to install that's listed in Add/Remove
Programs?

Are you using Windows Update (the web site) or Automatic Updates (the icon in
the taskbar)?

You should also be eligible for no-charge support directly from Microsoft, since
that's a security update.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

In advance, I apologize for posting all this stuff from the log file, it
can't be good reading. But Harry wanted to see it....

I am posting two parts (the beginning and end) of the huge log file, in
hopes that the messages the first time and last time around might be useful.
I see the most recent entries all have the same form, talking about enabling
the Cryptographic service (which I saw in my recent forum travels, I'll have
to go search for that stuff again).

Let's hope Harry or someone else can interpret these entrails, and that we
all can learn something. Thanks Harry and other MVPs. I'll go chase down the
Cryptographic stuff now.

Ok, I went and read stuff on the crypto service, and found this KB article
provided by Ottmar:

Here are my results from following lots (but not all) of the article. I only
completed the first 5 or 6 steps before I gave up. I was getting way to deep
into messing with the software distribution system for my taste.

1. rebooted, renamed edb.log, tried winupdate, KB950974 upgrade install
failed.

2. Cryptographic service was already set to automatic. I restarted it
anyway. Upgrade failed.

3. stopped cryptsvc, renamed catroot2, start cryptsvc, reboot (saw new
catroot2 dir), upgrade still failed.

4. Unregistered, rebooted, and reregistered all those crypto dlls, upgrade
still failed.

5. Removed hidden attribs on windows\system32\catroot2 folders, upgrade
still failed.

6. I abandoned this procedure, since the next steps involved disabling
trusted publishers and blowing away the distribution databases, etc.

Instead I just got up my gumption and removed the KB950974 update using
Add/Remove Programs. The security fix was removed (no longer in the list),
but the next upgrade attempt--after a reboot of course--still failed.

So I think I'm at the end of my rope. One last thing to try is to download
the KB fix directly, instead of going through wupdate website or automatic
overnight installs. I will report back in a few minutes.

My problems were solved by manually downloading the updates directly from the
MS download site, as individual patches.

This approach worked for the .NET 3.0 framework.
This approach worked for the KB950974 update in this thread.

My thinking now is that whenever someone has one of these upgrade problems,
the first step should be to STOP working with Wupdate or auto updates, and
instead just bypass wupdate by manually downloading the update directly from
the windows download site.

This approach seems to agree (at least partially) with Pa Bear[MVP]'s
statement above that updates are not installed properly because of wups.dll
registration problems. (Pa Bear provided this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144). I tried the wups.dll stuff, but it
did not help either.

In the end, I removed KB950974 using Add/Remove Programs, then manually
downloaded the individual patch from the download site and installed it
(which went flawlessly).

Now my wupdate website does not try to install it, and I am happy again
because I can't see any surface messages to bother me. (But who knows what
damage I did by removing KB950974 when all those other programs "might" have
depended on it--I guess time will tell).

Thanks again to the MVPs for your help. (I think if I was an MVP, I would
suggest the manual-download-and-install method first.)

There are two (2) Resolution Methods in KB943144. Did you try both of them?
