We connect to a Win2k3 Fileserver via VPN.
We have both Vista and XP machines connecting in. So that users don't
have to remember the IP Address we have added an entry to the hosts
files of the client machines - giving the server the name Zeus. When
accessing Remote Desktop or other services this works fine.
However when accessing files shares, \\Zeus we get the following
message:
"Zeus is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource."

If however we enter the IP address of the same machine into the file
browser it accesses it no problem.
This is happening on all the client machines, so I'm thinking it must
be a server issue, but I'm not sure what.

Any ideas appreciated.

How do you resolve names on the LAN? Are you using DNS and/or WINS?

The remote client should get both the DNS and WINS server addresses when
they connect. However things don't work quite the same way as they do on the
LAN.

Can you resolve the server name by using its FQDN? If you can you can do
it with just the server name if you add the DNS suffix in the client's
connection properties.

The real servers name is different from the one we are trying to use
from the hosts file, as the server itself is rack hosted, and the
provider gave it a long complex name.
So I don't think we're using any of the above.

I'm trying to figure out why just adding it to the hosts file doesn't
work.
I admit however i'm a little out of my depth on the stuff you've
mentioned.
