WinXP SP3 system hangs on standby or hibernate

The system, a recent build, is as follows:

Biostar TF7025-M2 (aka N68SA-M2T)
GeForce 7025/NF630a chipset
Athlon 64 X2 3600+
2 GB DDR2
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
WD 160GB hard drive
WinXP Home v.2002 updated to SP3

Whenever I try to go into standby, I get the message "preparing to
stand by ..." but the system just hangs.

Changing standby in the BIOS from S1 to S3 makes no difference.

I've enabled hibernation in Power Options but that doesn't work either. When
I try to go into hibernation I just get "preparing to hibernate ..." and the
system hangs again.

Everything in the power management section of BIOS looks okay to me, the
system has been doing this since it was all defaults and I don't see
anything there likely to change it. So it looks like a Windows problem.

I found that Microsoft has a hotfix for this problem here:

This replaces the ndis.sys and ndiswan.sys files with newer versions
(different versions for SP2 and SP3). I downloaded and ran it, it replaced
the files all right but only made things a little worse -- gave me a blue
screen stop error when I tried standby in S1 mode. In S3 and S4 (hibernate)
it just hung the computer as before. So I restored the original files.

Can anyone help?

Is the BIOS up to date? Are you running the N68SM823 version?
Have you updated to the nForce drivers version 15.24 yet?

Thanks, I'll look into all that. As the motherboard is fairly new I doubt
there's a newer BIOS (there wasn't the last time I looked), but I'm not sure
the drivers are up to date. I read somewhere on the Microsoft site that bad
USB drivers can cause this problem, though that wasn't a WinXP-related
thing.

To narrow things down, start with the bottom and work on up is the
best approach. Making sure the BIOS is up to date is where I always
like to start and then move to current drivers, to patches, etc.
Hotfixes should come in at the end. Have you already installed that
hotfix for the hibernation issue? If not, at the top of the page is
usually a link to request it (free).

I think you're right, because on Biostar's site just now I see there is a
new (9/18/08) BIOS with the description "Fixed S3 issue (Beta)."
Unfortunately when I try to download it I get "The file is not exist." So it
looks like they're still working on it and that presumably is the standby
problem.

My BIOS version is N68SA-M2T (from the BIOS screen) or
06/01/07-NF-MCP68-6A61MB01C-00 (from SiSoft Sandra). I don't see the
N68SM823 version you mention listed for my motherboard on their site. But I
just noticed they show only version 5.1 for this board while mine is version
5.0, according to Sandra. I wonder how much difference that makes . . . they
don't show 5.0 at all.

Yes, I did run the hotfix which replaced two files; all that got me was a
blue screen error on S1 instead of just hanging, so I restored the original
files.

I guess I'll have to wait for Biostar to come up with a BIOS fix that works.
In the meantime I'll install the nForce 15.24 drivers you linked to since I
know my present ones are older.

Going to a Biostar "Global" site instead of USA, I see they still have it
available for download there. But since it's beta and was apparently pulled
from the first site, I'm a bit leery of using it.

Neil,

Weird, I went there and didn't see it earlier. At least it is
acknowledged. If it isn't killing you right now, perhaps check back
frequently until it is out of beta as they are usually pretty good at
getting a fix out. Did you try those NVidia drivers yet for kicks?

standby or hibernation with that WinXP SP3 computer -- there's no error
message of any kind, it just tells me "preparing to stand by ..." or
"preparing to hibernate ..." as the case may be, and hangs.

Only Intel Processor can stand by or hibernate Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Wolf, I did get the NVidia drivers but haven't used them. When I started to
install them there was a list of which drivers were included so one could
pick and choose. But one of the NVidia drivers was for the HD audio, another
was for Ethernet, and both of those things on the Biostar TF7025-M2
motherboard are RealTek -- so I assume it wouldn't be useful to install
NVidia drivers. Most of the others are for items I didn't recognize and
don't really understand, so I decided to skip them until I find out more
about what they are. Everything works fine anyway, except for the
standby/hibernate issue.

As for the BIOS, I think I'll do exactly as you suggest and just check back
with Biostar regularly. I only build these contraptions as a hobby and
always have too many of 'em cluttering up the place anyway, so having just
one that doesn't go into standby or hibernate won't ruin my life. :-)

I did find the N68SM823 version BIOS that you mentioned in your first reply;
oddly enough I couldn't find it on the Biostar site directly but I finally
used Google and did find it, on the very site where I couldn't find it in
the first place. I downloaded it, but from the description it seems to be
mainly a fix for a couple of other problems I don't have. I'll probably
install it anyway after I've familiarized myself with Biostar's current
methods for doing this, but I don't expect it will fix this problem. I don't
even remember when I last updated a BIOS.

I have three other WinXP SP3 machines with AMD processors and they all stand
by and hibernate just fine, no problem whatever.

Unfortunately I can't follow the instructions on that page. My network
connection is a D-Link wireless adapter; I can follow the instructions up to
"Click the General tab, and then click Configure," but there is no Power
Management tab after that, and nothing else that offers the "Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power" check box.

I will try opening a "free support incident" as you suggest, when I can
figure out how to do that. Thanks.
