PROBLEMS with virus riddled laptop

A colleague of mine made the mistake of letting his secretary stick her
memory stick into his laptop's USB port.

Totally shagged! So I managed to get it to connect to the internet again,
installed the latest version of AVG Internet Security, BUT ..... some major
problems remain.

Please do NOT answer, unless you have a known solution .... I do NOT want
"have you tried...." or "I think this may help...." type responses. Many
thanks in advance for your understanding this.

FYI, the lapton is running XP sp 2.

The problems left are:-
1. Clicking on drive name (or even right clicking) does not open/explore the
drive . Instead I get the "Open with" window.

What options do I need in which windows in Tools->Folder Options->[File
Types] tab?
I can find the "Drive" entry in the list of types, but don't know how to set
up the "Opens with" (greyed out)


2. Before it was given to me, some w*nker had a go at the laptop, and
*partially* installed a Document Viewer program (might be windows doc
viewer). Every time the pc is started, I get a series of windows where
Installer is trying to ask for a CD-Rom to complete the installation. It
takes me three goes to cancel this.

BUT ..... it is also giving me errors that an Installation is in progress,
and prevents me from uninstallating other programs.

How do I force the completion/abortion of the Document Viewer? (No, I don't
have the CD and can't get it).

3. Also someone managed to partially remove some previously installed
software. eg. {Active Desktop Calender 6.5} These applications still
appear in the Add or Remove Programs list, but cannot be removed because I
get error with a .dat or other uninstall file type not found.

The program files seem to have gone, so how do I force removal of the entry
in the installed programs list?

4. every 30 secs or so, I get "Operating System is trying to establish UDP
connection with remote IP address 192.168.0.255 : 137" No matter whether
I allow or block it, the query repeats because there's no check-box to apply
my response to all subsequent instances.

Does anyone have a solution to this? (query is in AVG Internet Security,
v8)

I've tried adding 192.168.0.255 as a save address in AVG firewall (for all
profiles) but this doesn't stop the interruruptions

Only sure solution: format the hard drive and reinstall XP. Otherwise,
you can chase ghosts all over hell and back and still not know if the
computer is vulnerable or not.

Another solution is to format the hard drive and install an OS that
doesn't have virus or malware problems like Windows does. One such OS is
Ubuntu. Check it out at http;//www.ubuntu.com/ It's free and comes with
access to over 24,000 free programs.

System Restore ? - The more people "Twiddle" with it makes it
exponentially harder to repair/undo. Once you get it squared away
be sure to thank Larry, Curly & Moe for their help.

If you are not willing to participate in a 2 way dialog, then the only
sure fire way to get the problem fixed as "Alias" suggested is to
format the hard drive and reinstall the OS.

I'm more than happy to have a 2 way dialogue to help diagnose the problems
more thoroughly - just didn't want a sprawling thread filled with "have you
tried.....?" type posts.

I agree - a total reformat and reinstall would be safest - but that
presupposes that the laptop's owner has the Installation CD's etc. of all
the software on his pc, and backups of all his data. Guess what the answer
is on both counts LOL!

So far the virus scan has picked up 69 threats ...... methinks this laptop
had more than just one bad memory stick inserted into it !!!

Only an [OK] completion window displayed. No 215 lines of whatever???

Tried this tweak: "Customize Folder Shell Extensions"
This seemed like what I wanted to fix, so I installed it - but couldn't even
find whatever it installed !!!
Absolutely nothing in the instal process about where it went, or how to use
it :-o(

The registry folders such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder do not exist !!
So searched for "MSConfig" in the registry. While I found some hits
relating to msconfig.exe, nothing seemed to link to the totally cryptic
subkeys in the "uninstall" folder!

So, not sure what to do with this one???

Didn't find hptlbxfx.exe, but I can see that there is a lot of HP software
(not surprising on an HP laptop!). I'll hunt around and see what may be the
problem here.

The BEST solution is to return the computer to its owner after doing
nothing.

The odds of being able to completely clean a heavily compromised computer
are vanishingly small. Should these odds mature, you will be added to the
wanker list when your colleague passes the problematic machine to the next
goose.

Obviously your colleague was not practicing "safe hex" or this
problem would not have occurred.

My advice...keep out of it and let your colleague deal with
this...it ain't worth the ulcer. OR take it to a reputable
computer service shop if you feel obligated to assist.

p.s. If he had stuck his memory stick into his secretary's USB
port...things might have been a lot worse.
