Can anyone shed any light on my problem please. When I go into My Computer
the icon for the hard drives and DVDs are all generic so that I am unable to
see at a glance which is the DVD drives. I have been into Device Manager and
the DVD drives (2) are correctly identified. I have checked as suggested by
some in the registry for Drive Icons but this does not exist.
I am running XP Pro with all the updates. My video card is Nvidia but I do
not thinkl that has any bearing on the problem

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

There is a way to restore the drive Incons which I found how to time ago but
failed to make notes and forgot how to, but you can achieve the same results
by replacing the icons. check the links.

I used a Magic Marker to write the drive letter on the face of the drive.

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Also check this link... it seems that you can "restore" the default drive
Icon. By default no "DriveIcons" key is supposed to be under Explorer, so
delete it if you find it... that should restore de default CD-Rom icon in My
Computer/Explorer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ explorer

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Hi Ronaldo.
Thank you for your reply. I tried the first suggestion but there is no
Driveicons in the registry, the second suggestion looks promising but I will
wait until my son comes in before I tackle adding keys to the registry.
Whilst I am 80% on the electronics/mechanical side i am only about 40% on the
software side. One of the suggestions by nass has resulted in one of the two
DVD icons having returned although some times it reverts to generic icon. In
one of the documents it refers to this problem after a malaware or virus
attack. This recenlty happened to me but was sorted out by the technical
people at Kaspersky. I will let you know the result of the registry
alteration when my son has done the alteration.

LOL!

Still, if it works for you...

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Try this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need the XP CD installation media for
this process.

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Hi,

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

If that doesn't correct the issue (and it should) use this automated edit on

Re: Wrong Icons for DVD drives

Hi Kelly.
Sorry for the delay in answering but I was rushed into hospital and have
only now resumed normal life.
Basically I tried all your suggestions but stll no joy!!. It's proving a
tough one i am now thinking that a reinstall is the only answer.
