Hi there,
Would a W2K3 server still use Netbios protocol somehow for the clients
to be able to connect to its shares? Thank you, T

Re: server protool

Hello Tester,

You can disbable Netbios over tcp/ip on the NIC's if not needed. Also it
can be used or you can use a WINS server. What are your trying to achive
or is your problem?

I want to see if I block in the firewall the Netbios ports an XP
workstation on a remote network on an active directory domain can
still access shares on a remote server with shares. Assumption is all
the networks are connected through firewalls to protect each network.
Does active directory/W2K3 servers still use Netbios to allow
workstations to connect to shares? Thank you, T

Re: server protool

Hello Tester,

137 UDP. 138 and 139 are used from netbios. Did you block all of them? Even
without netbios you can also access shares with DNS path's. Also Active directory
uses Netbios for creating trusts for example.

Hi,
How would I access a share using the DNS path?
Click Start, Run:
\\server.domain.com\share
Thanks for everything, T

Re: server protool

Hello Tester,

Yes, your example is correct. Also you can use the ip address \\1.1.1.1\share
or \\server\share
