logon problem

Hi,
I have found this forum in desperation, would be grateful for any
advice.

We have a network with 4x terminal servers serving up to around 20
users each. We have a problem when users log on to terminal sessions,
where after a user provides user/password and appears to authenticate,
the blue background (that I take to be the first stage of drawing the
desktop) appears but the session does not progress further, no
taskbar, no desktop icons, just the pointer. Nothing works, and the
only way we have found to rectify the problem is for an admin to reset
the session through terminal services manager.

This problem appears to happen randomly - it can affect any of our
users and when it does, they will tend to experience a cluster of
these events over a couple of weeks and then nothing for months.
Interestingly it only happens on 3 of the 4 terminal servers. We have
looked and looked and cannot see any difference between the servers
where this does happen and the one where it doesn't.

We don't think it is loading, quite often the event occurs more when
less people are logged on to the server. We are fairly sure that the
users' previous sessions have terminated, i.e. that they are not
logging onto a stale or diconnected session

The bsic specs the servers have in common are:
Fujitsu-Siemens RX300, 2x dual-core Xeon, at least 3GB RAM,
W2k3 std, SP1
all fairly up to date with updates and patches

Really grateful for any ideas on this one.

Re: logon problem

Check if this helps:

From the TS FAQ at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ts/cc671614.aspx

Q. Sometimes when I connect to my terminal server, I see a black
screen. Why does this occur?

A. This typically occurs if there is a device between the client
and the server that is receiving packets but not passing them on.
One way around this problem is to change the MTU size for the
network adapter that is being used as a terminal server connection
to clients.

Ethernet uses a maximum MTU size of 1500. You can start with 500
and then slowly move up until you notice the problem to find the
correct value to set
