Hi, here is an issue my company desktop support cannot solve. When I am on
the network at work, and I create and organize folders and shortcuts on my
desktop, they do not show up the same when I log on locally off the network.
The folders, incons are all there when I log on locally, but they are not
positioned as a mirror image when I log on locally. I only have one user
profile with admin rights and log in the same way all the time. My desktop
settings are Align to Grid and Show Desktop Icons.

Simply put:
When I create a new folder on my desktop, it shows up when I log in locally
and on the network.
When I position the folder on a certain place in my desktop while on the
network, it does not show up in the same place when I log in locally, and
vise-versa. If I make position changes locally, they do not replicate when I
log into my laptop on the network.

Thanks

RE: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

Are yo uon the same machine when you lg in locally? Of so your profile is
not being saved correctly when you log off. If you are using different
machines you will have to setup each machine with the shortcuts how you want
them cause a local profile is only stored on teh machine. If you want the
profile to be used across every machine in the office you would need a
roaming profile.

Yes, one laptop, one user profile. Not multiple machines....

Thanks

Your workplace using roaming profiles?

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

No, not roaming profiles, but the interesting thing is that the only
differnce between work and home is the location and order of the icons on my
desktop. If I create a nice ordered row of folders for example at work, when
I log in at home, the changes do not show as the same....

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

Still testing. Color changes to the desktop take for local and network log
on, but the icon position still does not....

Thanks

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

Is there a "hardware" difference involved? Connecting to a docking
staion, difference in monitor resolution? etc.

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

I have a docking station, but I have tested with it docked and with it out of
the dock, just connected to a network cable. Same results. No monitor
difference. Even if I place icons in the geographic center of the monitor,
while local, they do not replicate to network and vise-versa...

??

Thanks

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

My work wants to reinstall the OS, which I would rather avoid. Any specific
files I could address?

Thanks

It seems that your are logging on to the laptop with two different
desktops, One for the office network and one for the local settings.
This would possibily indicate your are using a "domain" (aka active
directory) at work and local settings stored on the laptop. Can you
confirm this?

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

if it is a work machine and you want it "fixed" they will correct the
issue in the manner they elect.

Yes, you are right. The laptop is used for "work" so the business has
the "right" to reformat / reinstall the OS at anytime. The OP does
not "own" the laptop.

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

Thanks Gentlemen, I was not asking about work machine and who has rights. I
don't have to get it reimaged. I am in IT and have full admin rights to my
laptop and do fixes all the time.

My question still is, do we have a known issue with the deskop and what
could I do, short of a reimage?

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

Are you able to test a new "profile"? Or do a repair install?

Re: XP PRO SP2 Desktop On and Off Network

I already recreated my single and only profile on this machine...
