Upgrading Window 2000 server to Windows 2003 server

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 server that runs our accounting system. The CFO
wants to upgrade the accounting system but this requires a higher version of
Windows. How difficult or easy is it to upgrade a Windows 2000 server to
Windows 2003? This server just runs the accounting system, no other
applications. Should I just replace the server with a server that already
has Windows 2003?

Thanks,

John

Re: Upgrading Window 2000 server to Windows 2003 server

Hello John,

Is it a domain controller or member or workgroup server?

Does the application run on 2003?

Best regards

Hi Meinolf,

It's in another domain at this point. I recently replaced our PDC with a
SBS2003 server and this server is in a different domain. I plan on joining
the accounting server to the new domain at some time.

The new accounting application will run on 2003.

No, it is not a DC. It is still a member server of another domain, but it
will be joining a new domain at some point.

Re: Upgrading Window 2000 server to Windows 2003 server

Hello John,

It depends on the software vendor, i would check the website or support of
them, if an inplace upgrade is supported for there software. Then just insert
the 2003 disk and choose the upgrade option, ofcourse only if the hardware
is capable of 2003. If this way is not supported you have to use a new server
or start from scratch.

Best regards

Let me add to what Meinolf said. You may upgrade by putting in a 2003
disc but you'd be advised to at least slipstream it up to SP2 level
using something like nlite. You'll have a better upgrade experience
with something that's at the most current SP level possible.
