I just posted this message without entering a subject (I forgot). This is a
reposting with minor change.

My backup (Symantec BackupExec version 11d) skips the following files:

Unable to open the item
\\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\edb.log - skipped.

Unable to open the item
\\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\tmp.edb - skipped.

Unable to open the item
\\windows2003.ourdomain.com\C:\WINDOWS\security\Database\secedit.sdb -
skipped.

What are those files? Is it safe to exclude them from the backup? Thanks in
advance.

RE: Skipped Files

edb.log is when active directory makes changes it saves them to a transation
log at first, secedit.sdb is a database of your security settings, tmp.edb is
another storage area for AD while processing changes
If you want a true backup then these files would be good to have, it would
replay them in a restore... but they wont kill you either.. might lose a few
recent settings in a restore

You are probably getting these skipped messages because they are open files,
Symantec by default will not backup files that are open, tmp and logs files
are always being written too. You can buy what is called the Open File Agent
for Symantec to backup files that are in a state of flux.

Hope that helps a little

Re: Skipped Files

It does help. I've excluded those files from the backup set.
Thanks very much.

Re: Skipped Files

Hello John" a,

If you use the Advanced open file option from BE, you can backup them also.
