Winidows loads to a blank (black) screen with just a mouse pointer

I am taking a look at a Dell laptop for a friend. They were 'downloading'
iTunes (i'm not sure if they were actually downloading or trying to install
iTunes) and their laptop, running Vista, froze. On restart they got the
'computer was not shut down correctly' menu, and starting up in safe mode or
normally brings a blank screen with just the mouse pointer visible.

The mouse pointer responsds to touchpad movement. The windows splash screen
shows, and when the screen saver comes on it is visible. Ctrl-Alt-Delete and
Ctrl-Shift-ESC have no effect.

I have seen several posts about this online but with no real solution for
the ones that the task manager is not accessible.

Any Ideas? (Also, I don't know the NTTP address of the vista group.. so if
someone wants to provide me with that I'll post this there)

Thanks

BIOS to boot to xp cd,press r For recovery console,in recovery type:Fixboot
Type:CHKDSK C: /p Once thru,type:EXIT Let pc start,remove cd

Re: Winidows loads to a blank (black) screen with just a mouse pointer

I'm pretty sure the issue is not hardware related, and running checkdisk to
search for bad sectors won't be of any use. I'll run checkdisk anyway
through the console and see what happens.

Restore the system then try to download the right copy/version for Vista? 32
Bit or 64 bit?
Log from the event viewer can help in knowing the culprit!

RE: Winidows loads to a blank (black) screen with just a mouse pointer

First of all, go back into Safe Mode at startup.
Then do a System Restore from there, to before iTunes problem.

Click on Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

If problem persists, repost your message in vista general
