Visual C++ Runtime Library error

I keep getting this error message every day:

Runtime Error!!
Program: C\Programm Files\VERITAS Software\Update Manager\sgtray.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I've figured out that this file relates to the "Check for updates" function
of the Record Now software that came with my PC. I get the error if I invoke
that function, when I click on the sgtray.exe file in Windows Explorer, in
addition to its coming up on its own every day--probably when my computer
reboots, but I don't watch it so I'm not sure.

I recently updated my Windows XP with SP3, and I believe the error may have
started appearing then. I have Record Now version 4.50.

I've tried to locate support for Record Now with no success. It seems that
Veritas no longer exists.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it -- or at least keep
that darned error message from appearing?

Does the Application work if you launched it?

Go through these cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .

Thanks for responding. However, the suggestions did not help.

-- I regularly (every few days) delete temp files and cookies. But I did it
again, with no change.
-- I unchecked "enable 3rd party extensions" and disabled all add-ons that
were labeled as unverified or didn't show a status. Restarted the browser.
Still got the error.
-- My computer is automatically scanned daily for malware, spyware, and
viruses by Trend Micro Internet Security, which software is checked for
updates every 3 hours. I did not believe it was necessary to do any
additional scans. I have had no malware or viruses found during the weeks
I've been seeing this error message.

I believe (although I have no proof except coincidence) that the problem is
an incompatability with my "old" version of Record Now (CD-burning software),
specifically, the function of checking for updates, and XP"s SP3. I would be
happy if someone could tell me either where to download a current,
SP3-compatible version of Record Now (which I'm afraid doesn't exist) or how
to turn off some sort of automatic check-for-updates that Record Now is
apparently doing every time my computer restarts. I don't know what Visual
C++ Runtime Library is or what it does, but it's clear that the software that
runs into problems with it is Record Now and it's only the check-for-updates
aspect of the software.

sgtray.exe is not part of Record Now5 but it is part of backup software
belong t Veritas and you can find it bundled with Norton product because
Norton bought the company in 2005 unless you have an earlier product!

And remove the entry from here:

Locate this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run = look in
the right pane/window and remove the entry for it

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to

This is VERY good to know. I have to wait until "business hours" to chat
with them, however, and today is Sunday. So we'll see tomorrow if they can
resolve my issue.

"Autoruns for Windows" is a great little tool! I found the executable that's
automatically being invoked and turned it off, so at least the error emssage
will go away.

Yes, I have an earlier Record Now. I have no Norton products. Going to
veritas.com actually takes one to Symantec.com and there is no place to ask
for help with Record Now or Veritas Update Manager.
