System Restore & IE corrupt

I have Windows XP and used IE 7. I had to do a system restore on Saturday
because the add-ons someone messed up my system and I couldn't visit websites
or click using radio buttons. Now IE 7 has disappeared - when i click on the
icon my desktop flickers but IE never opens. The strangest thing of all is my
System Restore no longer works and that concerns me more than IE not working.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

At that point you might/must have a corrupted OS.I would,turn off system
restore,restart pc,download IE7 to desktop,go to run,type:cmd Install xp cd,
exit the menu,type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to
restart,type:EXIT Remove cd,restart pc.Back in xp,open IE7,once installed,
turn on system restore,set a restore date/time...

First, undo the System Restore. If it "no longer works," please explain
in detail what you mean by that. Which date was the Restore Point you
chose? Was it the oldest? System Restore works best when you choose the
closest, not the furthest date.

Also post back with a very detailed description of what exactly happened
when "someone messed up [your] system." What is the malware status of
your PC?

FYI:

To start Internet Explorer without add-ons

In Windows, click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
Click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Note:
To allow add-ons to run again, close Internet Explorer and restart it
normally.
You can also start Internet Explorer with out add-ons by right-clicking
the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and then clicking No Add-ons.

Ann,
You didn't let us know on the IE7 General group what did you tried and what
the outcome for us to be able to help you!

- Let us know your Operating system Version (H or Pro) + SP Ver?
- What your Anti-Virus program?
- Did you run a thorough scan for malware and Viruses?

# Try System Restore to an earlier date when things were working okay.
Disable your Anti-virus then restart in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 on start
Up until you get the Boot up options and select Safe Mode.

In safe Mode click Start >> All programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >>
System Restore and pick up a Restore point to restore your system.
It will do the reboot and the rstore will procedure pay attention to it and
see if it was successful or not.
Do n't forget to Enable your Anti-virus after a successful Restore and
hopefully it will also resolved your problem.

# Any error messages in the Event Viewer?
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Tells you how upset I am - I meant to type "somehow". I messed up the system
when I messed with the add-ons in Internet Options and not knowing what I was
doing with them.

I was trying to update Adobe Flash and it wouldn't pop-up with the run
software dialog box. At first I received a message that Adobe was trying to
add-on Google Search. So I started clicking things off in Manage Add-ons and
shut my pop-up blocker. Then I went back again to update Adobe and clicked on
the Install button and nothing happened. It was a nightmare from then on.

When I go into System Restore (which I did 2x) I went to the most recent
date, clicked Next and then it freezes. Nothing else happens but I can hit
the Cancel button and that works fine.

I had the whole shabang on this PC - Antivirus, Spyware, Malware, Antispam &
Firewall Protection from CA (ca.com). Very strict software so now I am using
Spy Doctor.

Overnight I performed a defragment analysis and when I go home, I will scan
it for any virsus.

Will follow up with you guys after I do those things. Thanks so much for all
of your help!!

Are you certain it froze? How long did you wait for it to come back?
Depending on different things, it could take it over a minute to get
everything together and get back to service the screen. Personally I'd
give it something like two minutes to see if it didn't come back, ready
to restore.
Also I note some questions below that you were asked but seem to have
not answered: Those answers could be important. Or not. It depends on
what the answers are how important they might be.

RE: System Restore & IE corrupt

Okay the ongoing saga continues but I do have hope - my System Restore now
works.

I right clicked on My Computer - Properties - System Restore tab - clicked
"Turn off System Restore on all drives". Restarted PC, went back in,
unchecked box, went into System Restore and it worked. I lost all of my
history but it will work from 10/7 on.

Still having problems with IE 7. I have Windows XP SP 3.

I receive two error messages: rundll32.exe is corrupt or when I am in IE, I
will enter a website and I receive a pop-up that states "cnn.com
unavailable".

I know I'm connected because I am using another site to get the internet and
its working fine. I can't uninstall IE 7 to reinstall because I've tried to
remove from the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and there isn't a remove
button. I tried going into the Program files and the Connection Wizard won't
delete - I get a message that another system is using it - could be the
laptop, I gues???

Is this hopeless because I miss using IE7.

Try to replace the Rundll32.exe with another one to your %SystemRoot%\
directory, opena search (Local search start>>Search) and type in rundll32.exe
when you find it copy it to this locations:
C:\Windows\System32

or from the XP CD:
Cannot find the Rundll32.exe file when you open Control Panel
