Hello,

I just had to reinstall windows xp home service pack 1 on my moms aging
computer. The recovery cd is just a service pack 1. Well now I cannot install
many antivirus software because it doesn't support this operating system.
What I need is to find an update to service pack 2. My moms pc only has 512
mb memory.

Thanks C

If you have the original CD and if the CD drive can burn CDs, I
recommend you go grab NLite 1.4.9.1, XP SP2 (full package), and XP SP3
(full package) and use NLite to create a slipstreamed SP3 CD and
re-install from scratch. It will then be patched to a full level and
your AV programs should work fine afterwards. Give it a shot.

Service pack 2 can be downloaded from MS:

Or you can load SP3 if you wish and skip SP2 altogether:

Actually, we're up to Service Pack 3 now. You don't need to install SP2
first. Your mom's computer has adequate memory for XP and should be just
fine.

Run the Microsoft update and you will get the latest service pack,
which is SP3, not SP2.

"Only" is not an appropriate word here. Except for those people
running particularly memory-hungry programs (such as photo editing or
video editing), 512MB is sufficient for people running Windows XP.

Re: windows xp home edition service pack 1

HOW TO get WinXP SP1 fully patched:

1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.]

2. Read & heed:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when
the install completes.

4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software
then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
