Cannot create shortcut on terminal service session desktop

I have been trying to figure this one out for months. I have read an article
or two indicating that updating your terminal service to SP2 resets all
permissions and file security settings to the default settings. Nonetheless I
have given domain users, everyone, remote desktop users all local admin
rights on the terminal server as well as full control of the c: drive. I am
only able to create shortcuts in users' 'My Document' folder, which users
also have full control over, although their 'My Documents' folder location
points to their home directory on a different server. Anyway, I have my
terminal server users full control on the terminal server but they are still
unable to create a shortcut on their desktop. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Glen,

Are you by any chance using mandatory user profiles ?

hmmm, ok. Is it only shortcuts you're having problems with, or creating any
item. Can you create a simple text file on the desktop?

Re: Cannot create shortcut on terminal service session desktop

OK, the one time I have seen this is with a mandatory profile, but as you
said you're not using them. Is this the case for all users? Does this also
happen for administrators too?

Re: Cannot create shortcut on terminal service session desktop

Domain Admins and the IT Group do not have problems creating shortcuts. I
have experimented and thrown a test user into the Domain Admins group, but
still no luck creating shortcuts. Go figure?? Thanks for the continued
replies.

Re: Cannot create shortcut on terminal service session desktop

If you have made a user a domain admin then you can pretty much rule-out
permission issues (with rare exceptions).

Are you absoultley sure your user doesn't have a mandatory profile, or some
software that makes it appear to be a mandatory profile? Log onto the
machine as the user, right-click on my computer, go into advanced -> user
profiles and look at the type.

If it's really not mandatory, then are you doing any form or folder
redirection of the desktop, and is the redirection going to a valid
location?

Cheers,
Jon

Re: Cannot create shortcut on terminal service session desktop

Have you checked your GPO's to be certain you haven't enabled a locked
down desktop? There is an option that would prevent users from changing
their desktop.

John, I am not using mandatory profiles and I am using folding redirection on
the desktop and it is going to a valid location. Thanks.

User desktops are not locked down in the applied GPO.
