Hi,

I intend to migrate my File Server W2K3 to W2K8 using robocopy tool.
Anyone knows any other tool that help to migrate File Server keeping the
structure and permissions besides Robocopy?
I heard to say that I should change a key in the registry to migrate a file.
Is that true?

Thanks.

Luiz

NTBackup? (or third party backup tools?) I'm under the impression that
backup utilities backup the NTFS permissions along with the data. Backup
from one machine,...restore to the other. You've already got NTBackup on
both machines, so it should not cost anything to try it, if it doesn't work,
you aren't out anything.

Hello Phillip,

Keep in mind that on 2008 you have to download the backwards compatible ntbackup
version for restoring older backups on 2008 servers.

You can download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e2-8b69-4c65-afa3-2a53107d54a7&displaylang=en

Thanks Meinolf,

Yea, I think I remember reading about that now. Does this mean that
Server08 has the same screwy-dumbed-down-can't-do-what-you-want
backup/restore utility that Vista has?

Re: File Server Transfer - Help

Hello Phillip,

Server 2008 changed complete the way of backup. Windows Server Backup will
back up a full server (all volumes), selected volumes, or the system state.
Folder or files backup is not longer supported. You can recover volumes,
folders, files, certain applications, and the system state.

Either with MMC or with wbadmin command line tool and windows powershell.

Best regards

In other words,...yes. :-)

All I care about most of the time is Folders and File backup. Everytime I
hear anything about '08 that has been changed it is always "bad". Looks
like I will avoid '08 like a plague just like I have Vista.

I also use NTBackup to backup other machines besides the one NTBackup is
running on,...how much have they screwed that up?

I've used NTBACKUP successfully to move files. However, that ws within
the same OS. Be careful about restoring from a back level version,
though. I don't have any experience, yet, with 2008....
