I just did an in place upgrade of 2003 Standard 64 Bit to 2008 64 Bit. On
2003 I had about 15 printer shares. After the upgrade I have zero printer
shares. Is this by design or a bug? Why would an in place upgrade eat
printer shares and is there any way to recover them other than to rebuild
them?

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Server 2003 to 2008 Upgrade Question Regarding Printers

Hello Daniel,

Hopefully you have a backup and can start new or you have to create them
all new. So it is by design, no bug.

All existing printers and printer drivers are deleted when you upgrade to
Windows Server 2008, so it is important to back up all printers before beginning
the upgrade. To do so, use the Print Management MMC snap-in on a computer
running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

Here is the how to migrate print servers to 2008:

Re: Server 2003 to 2008 Upgrade Question Regarding Printers

Local printers are not migrated in the "upgrade" process.

I'll assume the print server role was not installed

If it was you should have gotten a dialog stating to backup the printers.

There is a $WINDOWS.~Q hidden folder on the system drive. I was able to
load the hive from this information but I would definitely get the most
recent Server 2008 x86 and x64 print drivers for your devices.
