Hi All,

I have switched my computer on this morning and when i load my profile or
any of my families profile the machine reboots itself after around 10
seconds. It only happens when i load the profiles.

I have attempted to start the machine in Safemode to attempt to complete a
virus scan but i cannot seem to find the virus software when in Safemode. I
suspect that a virus is causing this but dont know which or how to remove.

I have a P4, XP-SP2 machine. Can anyone offer any advise as to what might be
causing this problem.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That behavior is not typical of a virus,
but it would not hurt to run a virus check.
Your virus checking program will not have changed locations
just because you have booted to safe mode...
just look in your programs folder

I'd first run a RAM check...

if that's ok...

use your cd to boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r


If your RAM is OK and chkdsk /r does not solve the problem

then boot to safe mode and perform a system restore back to a date prior to
the problem.


Just Google if you need more info on running chkdsk /r from the repair
console

Try this:
1. Physically disconnect your machine from the Internet.
2. Boot into Safe Mode.
3. Click Start / Run / msconfig{OK}
4. Disable each and every task under the Startup tab.
5. Reboot normally.

Does this solve your problem? If so then you can use msconfig.exe to bring
back one startup task after the other until you find the culprit. Do not
restore your Internet connection until you have re-enabled your virus
scanner and your software firewall (if you have one).

Can you restore it to yesterday?
What error messages in the Event Viewer?
It could be an overheating issue (yes I know it starting from Cold Boot) but
if the Thermal component on the CPU burnt then it will play up)!
Try the RAM test abd Disconnect all attached devices and start with barebone
system.
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Please post the complete Stop Error ( BSOD) Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Hi Guys,

Problem sorted, i went into safe mode and went back to a previous checkpoint
and was able to sort out the problem.

Does anyone think that this was a virus of some kind?

It could be or by a corrupt files that the restore procedure managed to
repair them and get you back to shape, but you need to monitor the system,
specially the Event Log for serious error about the System and application.
Update your security software and run a thorough scan.

My guess is that it is not a virus
but don't take a chance...
perform a full scan of your system with a recently updated virus checker!

Hard to say. By going back to a previous check point instead of using a
process of elimination, you destroyed the evidence.

An anti-virus checker will not detect many of today's masties. You need
to run something like Spybot S & D as well AND watch out for unexplained
behaviour!
