Hi everybody,

I have a smal soho network consisting of a netgear router, a brand new PC
équipped with Vista Ultimate (let's call it Vista PC), and another PC using
XP SP 3 (XP PC).

Tha mapping of the network, as seen on the Vista PC, is OK.

From that Vista PC I can access the XP files with no problem.

However, from the XP PC I cannot access the Vista files. I can see the
structure of folders, but whenever I try to open a folder I get an error
message indicating something like "access denied. You may not have the
authorization...".

Now, as far as I know, I did what was necessary as regards sharing files on
the Vista PC. The password protection is not activated.

I just don't know what to do.

Any clue Anyone?

Many thanks in advance for your kind help.

With best regards,
Daniel

RE: network problem. Cannot access files on a 'Vista' PC from an 'XP'

Some info re Networking XP and Vista.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, and no
identical usernames/passwords, you will be asked for a username and password
when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista
computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing
Wizard, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer
to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!).

In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network”
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File
and Printer Sharing.

Re: network problem. Cannot access files on a 'Vista' PC from an 'XP' PC

Hello,

The problem with having password-protected mode off is that when you access
your vista computer from your XP computer, the vista computer considers you
a guest.

So, if you are trying to access non-public areas of your vista computer, you
will get an access denied error message if you have not set the appropriate
permissions.

What areas of the computer are you trying to share? The following assumes
you are trying to share stuff inside your user folder (documents, pictures,
etc).

There are a few solutions that I can think of that you can perform on your
vista computer...

1- (most secure, but most annoying) turn on password-protected sharing. You
will have access to your files and folders, but you will have to log in each
time you access your vista computer if you aren't using the same username
and password on each machine.

2- put the files you want to make accessible to everyone underneath the
public folder (c:\users\public)

3- (less secure) change the sharing permissions on the folders you want to
have access to using the sharing wizard.

- right-click the folder you want to give access to, click share..., add
the user 'guest' or 'everyone' to the permission list, then complete the
sharing wizard. Be sure to change the permission level to the level that you
want (it defaults to read-only).

Note that unlike XP, Vista by default won't let you do certain sensitive
things over the network, such as copy files to system folders.

- JB
