I recently had to run a repair on my xp pro 64 now i can't access the windows
update site for sp2 to get everything back to normal. Simple things like
whats happened to my start button menus and why does the ie icon only produce
shortcuts and not access the web. HELP any suggests welcome

Re: XP 64 troubles

You say you had to "run a repair". Could you be a bit more specific? What
caused you to do the repair, and what did you actually do to repair it. It
sounds like you're seriously _not_ repaired.

windows update issue.

Re: XP 64 troubles

Hi there Charlie
I kept getting the blue screen of death with various error reports kenrel
debugger and various others, the hard drive kept searching for something
couldn't find it and the machine would freeze or crash to the blue screen.
I booted off the xp disc and ran through the set up right to the second
repair option. Everything seemed great until i tried to access the start
button menus they were gone leaving little icons for different things, i have
to log out of the admin account to switch the machine off, didn't have to do
that before. Also when i click on the IE icon all it does is make a short cut
to IE that doesn't work. I can't get on the update site at all.

Any Idea's ????

Cheers

Nick

Re: XP 64 troubles

Yes. It sounds very much like you have either bad hardware or were seriously
infected. If the later, a repair install won't fix it in most cases. You
need to do a wipe and reload. If the problem is hardware, then you should
probably start with a memory test. Let it run for a while, and see what it
comes up with. But I'm strongly suspecting an infection.
