I have helped a neighbour install XP SP3 - as they had read a lot of
problems with it, so wanted help.

While doing it, I noticed that WU was requesting to install the update for
Service Pack 1.1 NET Framework (sorry cannot remember the KB number).
Looking at their update history, it has been doing this every day for about
2 months, each time stating that it was successfully installed.

If it has really been successfully installed so many times, why is it asking
to be updated yet again (ad nausium)?

I have temporarily told it to stop asking for an update, but wanted to know
why. Is it possible that the update is not installed even though it says it
has.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Martin

Re: service pack 1.1 NET framework keeps asking to be installed

Martin,

If the update is continually being reoffered then that's usually an
indication that it did not install properly.
Is the update showing as installed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel ? [ You'll need the KB number of said update to see if it's listed
in ARP under Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KBxxxxxx) ].
If it is, then first suggest you Remove it, and then reboot the system.

Next, verify the installation of .NET Framework 1.1:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/03/03/8015158.aspx

*If* .NET 1.1 is verified, then the issue is related to the update.
Suggest you redownload the update from the MS Download Center and save
it: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en

Once the download completes, close all open programs and browsers.
Temporarily disable the installed security software:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Either disconnect the system from it's network/net connection or Enable
the native XP firewall if the system will remain connected.

Install the update now and reboot.

** Reenable the temp disabled security software now.
Disable the native XP firewall *if* a 3rd party firewall is being used
and reenable the 3rd party firewall **

*If* .NET Framework 1.1 can not be verified, then uninstall from
Add/Remove Programs. Reboot.
Download it from here and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en

Do the same for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&DisplayLang=en

Do the steps for temp disabling the installed security software.
Install .NET 1.1 first, reboot.
Install .NET 1.1 SP1, reboot.

Then do a manual visit to Windows Update [if no updates are offered from
Automatic Updates] and click the Custom button after the initial scan
completes. Make a note of which updates are offered for .NET 1.1.
Go to the MS Download Center and enter the KB numbers of the updates
offered in the Search box. Click Go.
Download, save, and then install it[them] with the installed security
software temp disabled.
