I have a situation.

I have both MS Internet Explorer and Firefox active on my XP SP2
machine. I have Firefox set as the default browser because I prefer
Firefox. I want to execute Verizon's speed test at
(http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/java/
and it appears that it will not run under Firefox, but will under IE.
I have a desktop shortcut created to do the test, but it wants to use
Firefox because it is the default browser. How do I permanently make
this shortcut and only this shortcut use IE?

Thanks

Hi Gecko,

I ran the test using FF 3.0.3 and it ran fine. I would suggest
installing the latest Java and see if that doesn't fix it. Also, if you
have a script blocker such as NoScript, you must allow the site in order
for it to work properly.

But if you only want to use IE, right click on your Desktop and select
New, Shortcut. From there enter this (if Windows is on your C: drive):
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
http://www2.verizon.net/micro/speedtest/java/

Re: Question on how to change defaut browser

Make a short cut with the following target replacing google with your url.
"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://www.google.com"

1. Right click the shortcut

2. Click "Properties"

3. On the "Shortcut" tab in the "Target" window, replace the part of the
path that refers to Firefox with the correct path to Internet Explorer

4. Put the path to IE in the "Start in" window too. It is a good idea to
put start/end quotes both for this and #3.

I have no Shortcut tab in the Properties window. Nor do I have a
Target window. Just a Properties window. With two tabs - General and
Web Document. I must be reading you wrong.

Thanks

I entered the following in the URL slot of the desktop icon properties
window:

file://"c:/program files/Internet explorer/IExplore.exe"

Said the path did not exist.

Sorry, you have an Internet shortcut. Do this...

1. Make a shortcut. To anything. Not an "Internet shortcut" (URL), a plain
old shortcut.

2. Right click the shortcut

3. Click "Properties"

4. Browse to IE and copy the path

5. Paste the path into the shortcut's Target window. Quotes at start and
end. Now, in the same place, leave one blank space then copy the URL into
it, quotes at start and end of URL too. You'll wind up with something like
this...

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"

....all on one line. In fact, if your IE is in the same place as mine, you
can just copy and paste the above.

That's all you need do. Clicking the shortcut will start IE and take you to
the site you want.

You weren't supposed to insert "File://" nor were you supposed to use
slashes. Try backslashes, or better yet, try a copy/paste of the following:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"

If the above is broken into two lines, copy the first line, paste it,
press the Spacebar, go back and copy/paste the second line.

Glad you got it working. But I'm curious as to why you didn't look at
my post which was the first reply to you, which explained exactly what
to do...

I just double checked, by re-downloading headers from 10/14. I missed
your first reply on the subject somehow. It is there. You are
correct. I apologize,
