I have WinXPsp3 and just downloaded/installed IE 7.
I notice when I open IE 7 and my (google) homepage shows, I can then go to
Tools and Windows update to check for any critical updates.
However, after I have checked and downloaded the updates, I click the back
(blue)arrow (uppoer left corner of screen) and expect to be allowed to go
back to my Google homepage. However, I can't get back to my google homepage.
I have to close the Windows update page and then open IE 7 again so I can get
my google homepage.
If I go to other sites while using google (in IE7), I can always click the
back arrow and be returned to the google page. Why am I not allowed to do it
when I go to the Windows Update page?

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

• Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without
Add-ons; or

• Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 *exactly* per the link below (which
automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party
Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this
behavior persist?

NB: If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7.

I strongly recommend using

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

5. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional

to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

If I use the "Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet
Explorer (No add-ons)." - the MS Critical Update page opens in a separate
window. After I check for updates, I can close that window and I am back in
my google screen.
I think that is okay. Don't you?
I really am unexperienced to do all the other things you suggested.
(Uninstalling IE7 and then reinstalling, etc.)

Run disk clean up and this command:
sfc /scannow
Run Windows Updates and get the security updates for IE7 and see it may goes
after a while!

You can always click the "Home" icon in the top menu bar; that's take
you to your home page. When anything opens a new window in IE, you can
only Go Back as far as the point at which that window opened. Unless
you've changed the defaults, the original window, or the one you can get
back to it with, will be the underneath the window that opened.

If you're saying that opening IE7 in No Add-ons mode resolves the unwanted
behavior, yes, that's OK.

Now, assuming you don't want to have to always start IE7 in No Add-ons mode,
you'll need to figure out which of your enabled Add-ons is causing the
behavior when you start IE7 normally. Chances are you'll need to either
permanently disable or uninstall one or more Add-ons.

The usual culprit(s) is/are third-party toolbar(s); e.g., Google (especially
older versions), Yahoo, Windows Live, Skype, Roboform, etc.
