Re-install of Xp,won't detect wireless network?

So I re-installed xp after my brother got a very bad worm from
downloading bad programs. The problem is that Xp hardly has any
features. I cant even enter into stand by mode. My priority is to get
the internet up and running so I can download the latest drivers and
updates. But I cant get xp to detect any wireless networks. It has a
built in wireless network card. but it isn't detecting anything. I
even hoked up my linksys usb adaptor with the linksys drivers ad
software. And the system still won't pick up on any available
networks. There are at least 2 free wireless networks that are always
running in my neighborhood. My labtop picks up these networks fine.
But this gimped Xp version won't. Are there some foundational drivers
I need to get? All I have is my original Xp disc.

Did you installed this Update:
Update for Windows XP (KB893357)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4d-e7c1-48d6-95ee-1459234f4483&displaylang=en

Try to connect by using Ethernet cable and get the updates including the
above then try to use the wireless.

XP doesn't come with wireless network drivers, and from your description I
suspect that you didn't install the motherboard chipset and other hardware
drivers after you completed the XP install.

Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website to get the correct and
necessary drivers. The board make and model number will be silkscreened on
it; if it's a branded PC, there may be other identifying tags on the
outside, like Dell's Service Tag and IBM's System Type.

After those drivers are installed, you can install the wireless card
drivers. You will need to identify that card first, though.

You can consider purchasing a USB-to-LAN adapter to get an Ethernet
connection on your WinXP platform. The following are some available ASIX's
USB-to-LAN solutions in the market for your reference. You can download the
latest ASIX's USB-to-LAN Windows WHQL certified drivers from ASIX's web site
(http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=ProductList&PLine=71) directly.

All ASIX's USB-to-LAN drivers were qualified on ASIX's USB-to-LAN demo
boards with ASIX's default VID/PID. If these drivers couldn't work with your
USB-to-LAN adapter, you might need to contact the manufacturer's support guys
