When trying to download and install SP3, I received a message several times
along the way that certain service pack files could not be copied, and did I
want to go ahead and install without them? There were several of these files
that could not be copied, here's an example:
-comadmin.dll ("cannot read from the source file or disk")
-slbcsp.dll ("data error-cyclic redundancy check")
-sqlolebb.rll ("data error-cyclic redundancy check")
-wmsdmod.dll ("data error-cyclic redundancy check")

At this point I aborted the installation.
Should I go ahead and install without these or further files that may not be
able to be copied? How important are they?

Sounds like where ever you are storing the SP3.exe you have corruption.
.... And you are downloading it and storing it and then running it.
Don't do it on line....

Run chkdsk on your C: as well as the drive you are storing SP3 on.
If you find errors, get a new copy of SP3 just in case its corrupt.

Read this Info and perform the instruction for the Bat file.
But first try this:
Open windows Explorer and delete these two folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution = Download and SelfUpdate should be deleted.
Run disk clean up on your Drive.
You can download this tool o run clean up:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim

Reboot your machine and try the bat file.
Open a notepad and copy and paste the following into it and save as
update.bat on your desktop. Double click the bat file to excute and click
[Yes ] to register the dlls and reboot your machine and see if that will help!

regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll

Try the SP3 Install, does it install okay?

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

It sounds like the download was corrupted. This can happen for various
reasons. Try downloading SP3 again from here

Perhaps re-download the full SP3 file again and try the installation
once more. If it fails with the same errors, reboot and try and
install using Safe Mode.
