Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

I can no longer get any of the ATI drivers to install. XP64, two ATI 3870s,
crossfired. When running installer, I quickly get Internal Failure: Error
Number: 0x80040707, followed by "unable to load aticim.dll". I removed the
existing drivers, and now none of the drivers will install, no matter which
version I try. I'm dead in the water.

I can install them with XP32 just fine, it's only my XP64 installation that
is dead. I'm not seeing this mentioned much anywhere, and have not yet found
a solution. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

Hmm - I don't have any ATI, but I would boot into VGA and download again
(files corrupt?). Uninstall the cards from device manager and reboot and
possibly re-seat the cards and additional power, then go over it all again
from scratch. If crossfire use a kind of bridge connection between the
cards, in the manner of SLI then check that as well!

I don't think there is any hardware related issues, as it works fine in
XP32. I didn't try the safe mode...I'll give that a shot...

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

Tony makes one really good suggestion (well, actually, they're all good, but
the one that should fix it is): DELETE the device in Device Manager.
Shutdown. Walk away. Come back. Start it up from a cold boot. And let
Windows find the card again. (It'll likely be "VGA" at this point.) Now you
should be able to add the ATI drivers. (I hardly ever use their installer. I
extract the files, and then go into advanced mode on the devmanager listing
of the device and add the drivers that way.)

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

None of that worked. Something else is wrong here. I was able to get the
drivers installed by doing it manually instead of using their installer.
AFAICT, it's their installer that won't run, not the drivers themselves that
would not install.

yeah, I've seen that. As I said, I've started ignoring their installer.

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

FIXED!

%SystemRoot%\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup was missing.

And because of that one missing path, the installer would not run. Makes you
want to find the developer responsible for this and break their fingers so
that they never write code again...

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

IIRC, this is an old (and apparently still current) InstallShield problem. I
ran into this about three years ago where we were trying to install
something with an MSI made by install sheild, and there was a mapped drive
that was missing - I forget why. Because of this, it would not run, and it
would not say why. Maybe we should whack them a couple of times because they
just can't seem to get it right...

Seriously - if there is a directory missing, how hard is it to tell the user
that such-and-such directory is missing, please create it and try again?
Noooo...I have a box dead in the water for 3 days because of some brain dead
installer....

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

yes, I'd agree. Though in this case, I'm a bit curious about where that
directory went. It should always exist on a normal system. But there's still
no excuse for silent failure.

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

The missing path was C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup. I looked into an old snapshot of the OS and it was
either. So your question is a very good one - where did it go? Did I do
something stupid and delete it (like I've never done something stupid to my
Windows installs before...)?

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

I just happen to semi-recall a solution from the flightsim group. It had to
do with an Installshield instance that repeatedly did something horrible
that happened to involv a corrupted path in the reg. (as I remember. . .).
The solution turned out to be Installshield not deleting it's own temporary
directory (in the Installshield main directory, if I'm not mistaken) and
removing it manually (or possibly the files in this directory). This goes a
while back!

Starts to sound 'related', though, doesn't it?

Re: Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll

A similar problem I have had, but solved it without deleting anything.
After the machine says that 32bit driver scrambled it up, and unable to
boot, even unable to repair the program,
I did replace the (happeningly Sony ) video installation disk with my
original64 bit windows installation disk, and booted by safe mode.
The PC found place to the 32 bit rogue driver and my whole Sony camcorder
program works on 64bit seemlessly
despite Sony does not support 64bit versions. (And realy why dont they, I
paid $1250 for their camcorder with those dinosaurus drivers)
