I've just gone around and around the Microsoft site trying to find an SP2 or
SP3 download for Windows XP Pro x64. When I chose x64, it was for Vista
only. When I went to
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx, there is no
category for XP Pro x64. I could try a guess . . . maybe I should use the
Vista x64 since it's an x64 update or maybe I should use the Windows Server
2003 update, or maybe even Windows XP. When is Microsoft going to realize
that XP Pro x64 needs its own category. I have the same problem when I try
to download most programs. They're good for Vista x64, Windows XP, and
Windows Server 2003, but very few of them actually state Windows XP Pro x64.
I also find the same problem in all the other forums that I go to. They all
believe that XP covers all XP, whether Vista x64, Windows XP Pro x64 and
Windows XP. Well, in that case, I should be able to download programs
intended for Windows XP x32 for my 64-bit os! It's a bunch of hogwash. If
no place else, Microsoft should have its downloads named with the proper
version of Windows.

Here's a website where everyone is confused and doesn't know what to do
regarding SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64
http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&q=windows+xp+pro+x64+sp3+download

Microsoft made Windows XP Pro x64 and is treating it as a poor removed
relation. As we all know, Vista x64 is for babies who need to be hand-fed
the A B C's of an os. What about the rest of us who are in the last half of
the alphabet?

Here is a reply to the question that I and many other people are asking:
'SP3 is for XP x32, and is not for XP x64. Windows Server 2003 SP2 is for XP
x64.' ?!?

WHY should I have to search for updates for Windows Server 2003 when I have
Windows XP Pro x64? When I asked the same question here, at the Windows
forums, I was told to download the updates for Windows XP. Who is right?
Someone has to be right and someone has to be wrong. A separate category for
XP Pro x64 makes much more sense.

Please don't tell me to get automatic updates because I do. I want to put
SP3 on a CD if Microsoft has it for XP Pro x64 and, after spending over an
hour looking around the Microsoft site and reading many posts, I still don't
know if there is a SP3 for XP Pro x64.

Mac and Linux are starting to look better and better all the time.

There is no SP3 for XP x64 yet. SP2 is the latest.

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

It's true, the XP Service Packs are confusing - as far as I can tell there
is no SP3 for XP x64 since the XP SP3 updates that referenses XP x64 were
all ready in the XP x64 SP2 that you have today, since XP x64 SP2 conforms
to XP SP3. The misalignment is grounded in XP x64 not being developed as
being an extension of the XP product, but rather an extension of the Server
OS products that happen to look like XP, so the enumeration of the Service
Packs does not conform across OS version numbers.

I really do not think you should contemplate installing any further SP's on
your own, I, personally, have dropped the thought since they will be offered
you via Windows Update as required per availability, and seing that any SP's
are VERY product oriented and will not bring anything to any other products.
They may seem to work - but you'll never know what they broke until it hits
you!

Vista is for Vista only, and my best guess is that any SP's labeled as a
Server OS SP are targeted towards Server installations with the work-load of
corporate networks in mind. No doubt it would install fine on your XP x64,
but if you're not serving a corporate network then it will not help any of
the other stuff you might be doing, except bogging down your machine with
background processing you don't need.

Relax, lean back and wait for Windows Update to take care of the SP's for
you!

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

I think you misunderstood what I said. I want to put SP2 on a disk and I ran
across websites where people are confused as to whether or not SP3 is for
Windows XP Pro x64. I finally found the site for Windows XP Pro x64 for SP2
at this site, not sure if it's the same one you posted.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...C0-6283-44C3-BB84-B2F0315B2AE6&displaylang=en

Unfortunately, it took me a very long time to find it. When I typed
'Windows XP Pro x64 SP2 download' in Microsofts's search box, I was directed
to this site:
http://search.microsoft.com/Results...ORM=QBME1&l=1&SearchBtn0.x=11&SearchBtn0.y=12
.. There's no SP2 download at this site.

My original post was meant to point out the insufficiencies, gaps or voids
for people who have XP Pro x64. Too many times, I have to choose between
downloading programs for XP, Vista x64 or server 2003. I always choose XP
but why should I have to download a 32-bit program for an x64 os? People
with Vista x64 don't have to. WOW64 doesn't always work.

In order to install Adobe Flash Player, Active X, I had to do a Repair of
Windows, download and install Adobe Flash Player, Active X, and then install
IE7 for x64. I couldn't install Adobe Flash Player, Active X with IE7 for
x64 installed. I uninstalled IE7 for x64 and tried to install Adobe Flash
Player, Active X, but I received a message that said that the program is not
intended for my machine. So, because I put in my time and knowledge, I now
have IE7 for x64 and Adobe Flash Player, Active X, but I had to jump through
hoops and dodge MS flags, error messages, and lack of effort and
consideration to make XP Pro x64 a stand-alone os with lack of support from
MS. I can't say that many other people will know that a Repair is needed to
first install Adobe Flash Player, Active X, and then install IE7, so they're
left without Adobe Flash Player, Active X. Does MS know how inconvenient and
irritating it is to have a message pop up with its associated bong to install
Active X or Adobe Flash Player for every website that's opened, in my case,
at least 100 times a day, but it can't be installed? No update from
Microsoft has allowed Adobe Flash Player, Active X to be installed after IE7
x64 has been installed.

SP2 and Adobe Flash Player, Active X are just examples of problems that
people with XP Pro x64 are forced to face because Microsoft refuses to get
off its duff, shell out a few of its billions of dollars, and do something
about it.

As I said in my first post, I'm angry that my os is treated as a poor
relation, twice removed by MS, and that MS doesn't care about it or the
people who bought this supposedly next generation os, and is putting all of
it's attention on Vista x64, a baby-bs os. I'm tired of being deprived of
programs that aren't XP Pro x64 compatible and I want something to sink my
teeth into and I want it now! The cards show that I might just as well start
whistling Dixie right now.

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

Denise:
I finally figured out why you're having so many problems with XP x64.
When you download a program for XP x64 it has to be compatible with
Server2003 x64. Adobe doesn't have a x64 flash player yet so you need to use
IE7 32-bit (default unless called from a 64-bit program), also the same with
Vista x64. If the update is listed for Vista it's not for XP or XP x64.
Trying to add incompatible components can corrupt an operating system.

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

O.K. - I may have missed a few essentials there. The SP you want to put on a
disk is the one in the first link in your above post (SP2), and contains all
of SP3 that you will need, so you can safely forget about SP3 until the
64bit SP3 is announced to be released.

The second link points to text in documents referencing your search
ley-words - not the download itself.

I totally agree that information can be hard to find, and it really is very
sad how MS decided to side-track the best OS they have made to date. This
decision has persuaded software developers not to invest in more development
into the product, since not many more will ever buy it, (Since it has been
side-tracked). But the lack of 64bit software is not any concern for MS
since they do not write the software in most cases. They do, however, write
the Active-x component.

You cannot make Java and Flash work from the 64bit browser - but they both
work fine in the 32bit browser. It's a bit cumbersome to learn to work with,
but I solved this by having the IE icon in the Quick Launch Bar default to
the 32bit and editing the Desktop icon to point to the 64bit instance. It's
not half bad, in my opinion. In the best of worlds it wouldn't be
neccessary, but I honestly don't know who else to blame - or why I would
want to keep bothering over the long run.

XP x64 is not in the same family as XP, except for it's looks. It is derived
from the Server OS's - with the server parts removed, so they couldn't name
it after the Server products. But you are right, naming it after XP was
probably a mistake that has generated much confusion. Somebody decided it
needed a name, and I guess they believed that the target audience would be
people running XP workstations who wanted to jack up their computing a notch
or two.

So, I can only sympathise!

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

Hi Dennis,

I'm not having problems with XP Pro x64. I'm having problems with MS not
creating specific updates for Windows XP Pro x64 as they are for Vista x64
and Server 2003. XP Pro x64 is an os unto itself and it should be treated as
such. MS has turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to that. I've found many
other programs as substitutes for x32 programs that won't work in an x64
machine but some are just not available and it makes running and updating XP
Pro x64 a task at times, which should fall on the shoulders of MS since it is
their product. I paid for the product when Microsoft was spouting it as
their up-and-coming os for the new millenium, that is until they saw that not
enough people were purchasing it. So my up-and-coming, state-of-the-art os
was tossed by the wayside and MS put its energy and development into Vista
x64, which boggles my mind. Vista x64 is for children who need nice colors,
blinking lights, large buttons, arrows, and anything else that is geared
toward the computer-mentally-challenged. I gave my old 2000 XP Pro computer
to my 6-year old grandson and he uses it like a champ. He has an email
account and he knows how to put documents into My Documents and pictures into
My Pictures. He knows how to use Microsoft Word and he uses programs to help
him learn how to read and do math. He knows how to change icons, burn CDs,
go to websites that have QuickTime movies, and, when he wants a new program,
I help him find what he's looking for but he downloads and installs it. He
runs Defragmenter, cleaning programs, and anti-virus/spyware/malware
programs. This is also exactly what Vista x64 is geared for . . . a
beginner.

Some people I need programs geared for XP since I have XP Pro x64 and other
people have told me that I need programs geared for Server 2003.
Other computer forums don't have a topic for XP Pro x64 and I've been told
to use the XP topic, not Server 2003. Adding XP Pro X64 to all of these
things is something that is needed.

Re: SP2 or SP3 for Windows XP Pro x64

Yup, I agree with you about the reason for the name that they gave XP Pro
x64. It didn't win people over because there wasn't enough software on the
market for XP Pro x64.

I also have the x64 browser and the x32 browser. I couldn't install Flash
Player until I did a Repair and prior to installing the x64 browser. I
continued to receive the message that the program wasn't intended for my
machine.

I like the XP Pro x64 os itself but MS really needs to make some
work-arounds, probably WOW64 files, in order to make it more compatible with
the pc world.
