We have network with 10 windows servers and 2 windows 2003 domain
controlers. Domain is in Windows 2003 native mode.
We want to go to Windows 2008 native mode to have such services like new
DFS service etc..
What is the best and simplest way to move to Windows 2008 native mode.
We will buy new hardware for some servers but the old will remain for
some time. Our domain controlers are also DNS and DHCP servers and they
need to ramain on the same IP number.
How to start and go on with the process?

Hello MarcusB,

If you have to keep the names of the DC's an inplace upgrade of the server
is the easiest way. Is the hardware sufficient for 2008?

Re: Moving from Win 2003 to Windows 2008 domain

The problem is complicated because we would like to move to the new
hardware but on place migration is very atractive. Our domain controlers
should have the same names and should have the same IP numbers , because
they are also DNS servers. Any good suggestion?

THe old domain controlers are running Windows 2003 server standard
eddition. The new will run Windows 2008 Enterprise Edt.

How to move it this situation DNS servers. We can not have longer stop
than 4 hours during the night.

Can we start new server, promote them to Domain controlers and chaneg IP
and name later?

Re: Moving from Win 2003 to Windows 2008 domain

Hello MarcusB,

If your concern is only DNS, then i would add new DC's to the domain. The
servernames are not that important, except you use the names for some app's
that are need to keep the name. If you use AD integrated zones on DNS, all
new DC/DNS servers will get the complete zone information replicated and
are full writable.

Personally i would add new DC's, move the FSMO roles to a 2008 DC, make all
new DC's Global catalog and DNS server. For the clients change the DNS server
ip addresses to the new ones, i assume you use DHCP, so this is easy done.

If you can describe the need for the same names, maybe we find another solution
without the same name. Ofcourse you can install a new server, demote one
of the old and rename it and change the ip. Then you can use the free name/ip
address for the new server and promote it then to DC.

Best regards

Re: Moving from Win 2003 to Windows 2008 domain

I can not change the IP number of our primary and secondary DNS which
are connected to the internet. The DNS server which will be on the
Windows 2008 domain controler need to have the same IP number as the old
one. The reason is that upper DNS server in our ISP provider have NS
records which point to our old DNS ip number.

Is it possible to change IP number of the domain controler without any
problem?

Hello MarcusB,

You can change the ip of a DC without problem, make sure that it changes
the record in DNS after rebooting the server.
