Moving C:\Documents and Settings.

Windows XP Home, SP3.
I am running out of space on my 16GB C: drive. I only have 1.58 GB left.
I have plenty of vacant space on my 58.8GB D: drive (40.6 GB free).
Whenever possible I install new programs to the D: drive.
I have moved a lot of old programs files from the C: drive to the D:
drive and then used a registry checker to move the registry addresses to
the new drive.
My C:\Documents and Settings Folder has 3.81GB of files.
I am hoping to move the whole D&S folder to the D: drive to free up
those 3.81 GBs of space on C:.
Can this be done?

You can move My Documents, which will have the bulk of the files. The
easiest way to move it IMO is to right-click on the My Documents icon on
your Desktop then left-click on Properties. You will see the Move tab. If
you don't have the My Documents icon on your Desktop, you can put it there
by using Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Customize button.

IIRC you can also use the free TweakUI Power Toy.

You can also store your data somewhere else-- and the folder doesn't have to
be called My Documents.

If you like that name, make a new directory on the D: drive called My D
Documents;-)

Moving the '\Documents And Settings\' Folder to Another Drive

The following is based on KB236621 but revised for XP.

1. Open Explorer.
2. Create a new folder called 'Documents and Settings' in
your desired drive.
3. Create a new profile with administrative permission and
call it "move".
4. Logoff then logon to the "move" account.
5. Copy all the folders inside 'C:\Documents and Settings\'
(except the 'LocalService', 'NetworkService', and 'move'
folders) to the new location. (The LocalService and
NetworkService folders will be re-created automatically.)
6. Open the Registry Editor and Find & Replace all
instances of "\Documents and Settings\", including:
- '\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Documents and Settings\'
- '%SystemRoot%\Documents and Settings\'
- '%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\'
- 'C:\Docume~1\'
7. Shutdown your computer, wait 30 seconds and turn it on.
8. Logon to the 'move' account.
9. Repeat step 6.
10. Reboot and logon to your original account.
11. Test by renaming the '\Documents and Settings\' folder
in drive C. If you can rename it then it worked!
12. If everything's OK, you can delete the 'move' account
you created before.

Thanks, but I had already moved the 'My Documents' to the D: drive some
time ago.
When I check the Properties on the desktop icon, it says it is located
on D:\Documents and Settings\Bill\My Documents
What I'm asking about is the C:\Documents and Settings folder, which
contains the User files, Application Data, Local Settings, etc. That is
the 3.81 GB hog.

Hi Bill,

Buy another Hard Drive or replace your current Hard Drive with a larger
Hard Drive. It will mean a lot of work that is involved, but you will gain a
lot of room for the future.

If you save your Downloaded E-mails, you will need to do just that.

16gb is too small for a winxp even if My Documents are located on another
partition.
Using a registry tool to amend the pointers is fraught with danger.
Use a third party tool to reduce the size of your other partition then
increase the size of C to about 25gb
or buy a larger hd and clone your old drives to the new, at the same time
increasing the size of C, with a third party tool such as Acronis

Hi Bill,

While anything is possible, it may not have the outcome you desire.
Since you now have programs on C: and D:, and data on D:, you have a bit
of a mess between the two.

Depending on your RAM, you could change your pagefile over to D: which
would free up quite a bit on your C: drive. Mine is fixed at 750 meg
each on two drives (D: & G, so my C: partition remains small (7 gig).
I have also always installed all my programs to a different drive,
except for those that don't offer any option.

I guess the other question is, do you only have one hard drive that was
partitioned or do you have two physical hard drives? A 16 gig C: sounds
like you just have one hard drive partitioned into two. If that's the
case, you could also use software like BootIT NG to resize the partitions.

I would suggest buying a larger drive and using the (usually) included
software to clone your data to the new drive. Because 42 gig of total
free space isn't a lot, unless you don't do a lot on your computer.

Whether it can be done or not, the partition is too small. You should just
get a much larger drive, clone yours to it, and the problem will go away.

Where I am, 500-gig drives are around $70, and you can get cloning software
for free (Even just as trial versions). You'll be done inside a couple of
hours and nit have to worry about it for a couple of years.

I suggest to use ATF Cleaner for removing some unwanted files (i.e.
temp files,
cookies, temporary internent files, & others). This help to reclaim
back some memory space from
your hard drive.
