I compressed some music files using right click> send to>
compressed folder. Now when I migrate to the files and click extract
all, I get 'error reading file' message. Or, one time I got a msg
saying the file was password protected. (Which it never was). Is there
a trick I'm unaware of to extract the songs? TIA.

I'd try again...
if it still does not work, use a third party Zip utility
such as Free Zip or 7-Zip

Re: zip file help

XP has its own type of compression, which is (in theory) transparent to the
user. I never invoke this option, since such files may be readable only via
XP. In contrast, a file or folder compressed with WINZIP, WINACE, WINRAR,
7ZIPS can be read on most PCs and even some MACS.

When you say "migrate" are you moving the files to a different computer
and/or a different operating system? That may not work with XP compression.

Addtionally, one can have encrypted files under XP. Again, the operating
system handles all the details. But, if you reinstall XP, even with the
same user and the same password, that will fail. Ditto for reading such
files outside of XP.

If the problem is only "compression", you have some hope that another PC
with the same operating system can open the files. If the problem is
"encryption", then you have little hope, unless you made a proper backup of
the keys.
