When I am attempting to recover my machine from "stand by" mode, my monitor
will not come back on.The power button is lit, but the screen remains black.
My system is a Dell Dimension E520 with a 19 inch flat panel monitor -
1907FPC,DIM,M. This problem occurs aproximately 50% of the time when I am
attempting to recover from "stand-by".

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

Have you tried simply switching the monitor off and back on again ? ! :-)

What method are you using ? Mouse? Keyboard? Both fail?

Is the PC waking? Check for hard drive activity. Is the
power button illuminated as standby, usually orange,
or as operating? If the PC is active and the monitor is
staying in standby, it could be that the video card is not
starting.

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

Thanks, RJK. I have tried that many times, but it does no good.

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

Thanks mystery person. I have used multiple ways to put my machine into
stand-by and have used both keyboard and mouse to bring it back. The method
doesn't seem to matter. I get the same results.

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

Thanks Ian. Yes, the PC is waking. The power button is fully illuminated
and the hard drive is operating at full speed. If the problem is the video
card not starting, why does it only happen part of the time? The mystery
continues.

Did you try both video outputs and both monitor inputs,
assuming there are two of each? I assume that you are using
digital rather than VGA connections.

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

When you say "both", I assume you mean VGA and DVI. My monitor has one of
each. It was hooked up with digital on day one. I never tried VGA.

Have you checked to see whether or not there is an update to your video
driver?

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

I am signed up for automatic updates from Microsoft and i have all the latest
updates from them. Would the updates you refer to be included in those or do
I need to look somewhere else?

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

You need to look elsewhere. Find the manufacturer of your video card and
search their site for a possible update.

Similar thing happens occasionally when my computer comes back from
"hibernation". If I tap any key, the monitor becomes normal. In my
case, the power management is set to switch off the monitor after 3
min of non-usage of keyboard, and somehow the "hibernation" seems to
remember it. (I don't ever put my computer into standby -- it's always
hibernation or shut down.) I wonder whether something similar is
happening with your computer.

Re: Monitor remains black after stand-by recovery

....most likely this resume from Standby problem is ACPI related...
....sure all applications are quite before going to Standby ?
....if not already using one, have you tried a hard wired PS2 keyboard,
and/or tweaking around the ACPI S1 / S3 settings in bios ?

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?form=MSHOME&setlang=en-us&q=xp+wake+up+problem&mkt=en-us
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1446103&SiteID=17

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...498-b9d1-a6aed1faa89a&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=&p=1

....just a thought, ...A very long time ago, on an old PC Chips Skt 462
motherboard of mine with "shut down" problems, a bios option "Assign IRQ to
VGA" had to be enabled to get rid of shut down problems, and I think it was
on that board that resume from standby was also a problem if that bios
option was disabled.

Since this is 11 days old, your problem may already be solved. But suggest you
never, NEVER use a Microsoft-provided driver for any specific branded hardware
not manufactured by Microsoft. Always check with the applicable manufacturer
for latest drivers.

Even though a driver offered via Windows Update may occasionally be the same one
the manufacturer has available for download, the gamble is too great IMHO.
