Ms Baseline Security Analyzer

I recently installed version 2.1 of the Security Analyzer to check my XP_sp3
machine for security issues
and got a few minor issues corrected.

For whatever reason, whenever an update has come out...
The update has failed when I allow it to install automatically.

With the Security Analyzer I can at least see what's missing,
download the update manually, and install it with no problems.

Though I am not sure why I can no longer install updates automatically...
at least there is a good work around for anyone else having a similar
problem.

Though it's designed for the I.T. professional,
even a dummy like me had no trouble using it.

It's just necessary to have IE closed while running it.

From the 'sound' of the issue, Windows Installer is functioning but the
Windows Update Agent [WUA], which detects, downloads, and install
updates, appears to need a .dll registered, is damaged, or at a lesser
Version then what is required in order to install Automatic Updates.

First, see if Method 1 here works [ignore the title as it also applies
to post-application of XP SP3 in some cases]:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new
Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

If no joy, then suggest you give this tool a shot as it will install the
latest Version of the WUA: AU Check (v78)

Download and save it. Close all open programs and browsers.
*** Temporarily disable the installed antivirus/security
suite/anti-malware software.
IF a 3rd party firewall has been disabled, then enable the native XP
firewall as the system must be connected in order for the tool to
download required software components needed to update ***

Now run au_check_v78_codeplex.exe and allow it some time to complete
it's operation. Restart the system afterwards even if you are not
prompted to.

IF all updates have been installed up to now, you'll have to wait until
next month's updates appear to see if the installation issue has been
resolved. That will occur on the second Tuesday of November,
the 11th.

I followed your [Method 1] advice and it worked perfectly...
so I did not have to go any further.

I appreciate your excellent guidance.

No joke, you are one of the sharpest people I've encountered
in my 8 years or so of seeking advice on Usenet!

Getting my system fixed was a far better alternative to the
manual install method, as I am now able to see what optional updates there
are...and as it turned out, there were a few that I am now applying.
