only desktop wallpaper - nothing else

[bptheini]

At last able to get the winXP to boot to desktop after doing chkdsk /r thru
the Recovery console. But there is nothing else apart from the wall paper, no
desktop icons, start men, task bar etc.I am able to use alt/ctlr/del to get
to the task manager. What can I do to get this pc functioning again.The C
drive have about 75% free space and I have the hdd scanned (as slave) and
whatever Spybot,Adaware found, they were deleted successfully. Many thanks
for your help.

Run a thorough scan by doing the following steps:
# First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

just dont know how to start as there is no icons/Start menu on the desktop.

Can you get into Safe Mode and do it there? If you don't know how to get
into Safe Mode, just reboot and hit F8 repeatedly until you get a menu
and choose "Safe Mode".

That said, what happens if you press the Windows key in Normal Mode?

You can by pressing the Windows Key on your Keyboard or try to run the
programs through the run command by pressing the windows Key + R.
For example in the run command type : iexplore.exe to start the IE.
Or Safe Mode with networking.

I used alt/ctlr/del and new task,"iexplore.exe," hit enter and nothing
happen. Under application, there is nothing but Under the processes, there is
the IEXPLORE.EXE 00 3388k

I tried to "Repair" and along the way it says it cannot copy driver.cab
file, retry a couple of times, but nothing happen from above message. Then a
message appears "SMART" is failing, please back up data......... so think the
hd is giving way. What do you think? Thanks

I think you Spot on, the HDD is going and it is smart enough to let you know
it will fail phisycally.
I would like to tell you to run the diagnostic tools on the HDD but this can
be done after making sure your Data is safe and backed up on a removable
storage then if you want to be sure it is the HDD run the test by using the
HDd diagnostic tools if you don't like then a new HDD is the way but make
sure the RAM Sticks also pass the test!

Re: only desktop wallpaper - nothing else

This generally has to do with display drivers. If you have recently done so
or ran the MS updates to do so, try a rollback via the Device Manager. If
this is not the case, use Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end process on Explorer.exe if
it is listed and either way, then go to File/New Task (Run) and type in:
Explorer.exe.

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.
