Licensing Questions

Hi;

Either Terminal Server licensing can be a little confusing or I'm not as
bright as I think I am (no comments necessary).

Q. Is it correct to say that that a Win2003 TS can either be in USER or
DEVICE cal licensing mode?

Q. If I use USER cals, that means a single user can logon to the TS from
any machine (office PC, home PC, laptop, etc) and only consume one cal?

Q. If I use USER cals, and a user logins in 2 times concurrently, I assume
that consumes TWO cals?

Q. Can DEVICE cals be converted to USER cals?

Q. Scenario: A user has a machine with dual monitors and has TWO TS
sessions going (one on each monitor). Does that consume 2 USER cals?

[Osama Sajid] Not sure what you mean by that.. but there is no strt fwd way
to convert CALs. Please let us know what you are trying to achieve here.

[Osama Sajid] - Nope - its still one CAL if the domain\user used to create
TS sessions is same for both TS sessions.

Hi Osama;

My question re: converting DEVICE cals to USER cals. I have a client with
15 DEVICE cals and I know that you have to config your TS License server to
do either DEVCICE or USER cals. I think it might be best to have this client
buy USER cals. Can their existing 15 DEVICE cals be converted to USER cals?

correct

Technically the license agreement prevents this but there is nothing
that enforces this. Keep in mind that per user cals are NOT tracked or
enforced in any way.

You can try calling the MS clearinghouse and see if they will reissue
your licesnes to per user.

1 but again, user licenses are not tracked or enforced in any way.
