I want to share this solution to a problem that showed up 1 week ago.
Opening any video file with WMP in Vista x64 would cause an instant reboot
of my PC.
No BSOD (though I have activated not to reboot instantaneously and show the
BSOD), no traces in event viewer, no leads, no hunches, no nothing.
This sudden reboot was not reproducible and/or predictable.
The only common factor was playing a video with WMP, but not always.
I began suspecting of my brand new Powercolor ATI 4850 card, first ATI after
many years of faithfulness to Nvidia, which had been installed two weeks ago
(counting back from today).
So I fired up system restore and "rewound" my PC 5 days back, just 2 days
after installing the ATI card.
That "seemed" to solve it.
As days passed, a couple of mysterious reboots showed up again so I decided
to investigate.
Something was being run that was provoking it.
To make a long story short, running Nero StartSmart would cause an MSXML 4.0
error which I had overlooked.
Playing a video before that error was Ok, but after the error I would get a
reboot without BSOD at the first attempt of playing the video.
Considering that GIYF, I ended up in Nero FAQ where they stated that the
MSXML thing was not to blame on StartSmart but on a corrupt MSXML 4.0
installation, kindly inviting me to download and install MSXML 4.0 SP2
(KB841833) and MSXML 4.0 Security update (KB936181).
So I did and after uninstalling MSXML 4.0 I installed both updates.
Tried a video playback, no problem.
Fired up Nero StartSmart and no error.
Tried a video playback, no more reboots!
Now my index finger doesn't tremble any more when clicking on a video file.
