A few causes of the pointer jumping:
- The touchpad vibrates (bounces up and down) as you type or tap on a
laptop or its keyboard. This causes intermittent contact within the
membrane, that is read as a tap, and causes the pointer to be moved.
- An optical mouse needs to be on a porous, non-glossy surface. Any
shiny surface can cause the mouse to think that an extreme move was made.
- Any of these devices, or an older mouse with a ball, could have an
intermittent short, or open in the cable, that causes the pointer to
jump to a new position.
- The driver for one of the devices, including the graphics card, could
be damaged. I can't explain how this could cause sporadic jumps to a
new location; I think it's possible, just not explainable by me..
- Malware could do the same thing, damage drivers, etc.
