Files moving on their own

I have a problem with a few users where they will try to move or delete files
in their share folder and they keep coming back or will move back to the
origional folder whenever the user reboots or logs back on to the server.

We are running Windows 2003 R2 Small Business Server with syncronized files.
The users "My Documents" are mapped to their user drive. I have tried
turning off the syncronized files, that did not work. I tried moving the
files from the server itself, and when the user logs in, the files are back
in the origional position. This is only going on with 2 users at this time
and then I have another user that whenever he is off line and works on a
document, it will not sync up when he reconnects. In all of this I have not
been able to isolate and event message or any clue as to what is going on.

Thanks,
B~

Re: Files moving on their own

By default are you refering to default Windows folder names? If so, no that
is not the case. For instance, one of my users started saving invoices to
her "My Documents" folder, then decided to get them organized, so she made a
new folder named "Invoices 24269 t0 00000" Then she would move the
respective invoices to that folder. They would stay there during her
session, but as soon as she would log off or reboot and log back in they
would be moved to the origional location. Same thing if she deletes a file,
it will come back. I have also confirmed her rights and owenship of the
files and folders. She is the owner and has full access rights.

Hi - since you're using SBS, I strongly suggest that you always post to
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs, even if you also *crosspost* to the
regular groups. SBS is a tightly integrated suite and does many things its
own way. I'm setting up my reply to crosspost there.

I have to ask why you want offline files enabled on your LAN-connected PCs.
I don't recommend that; it can be useful for laptops, but it invariably
causes problems on desktops, in my experience; I've seen people lose data. I
prefer to disable that via group policy and have all users access their
redirected My Documents *directly* on the server.

We have a mixed environment of laptop and desktops and it was something that
was set up with SBS as a default. The issues is on 2 laptops and one
desktop. I can turn it off for the desktop, it is no big deal. But even
when I did turn it off on the desktop in troubleshooting, the issue still
presented itself.

Yes.

Did you join the computers to the domain using /connectcomputer? What do you
see in your event logs? Any errors when you check out an rsop.msc? How big
are the My Documents folders in general?

Re: Files moving on their own

I use the connect computer tool on the SBS internal web page. I added all
the computers in the domain using this tool. Event logs have shown nothing.
I am cleared everything in them and then created the problem and no events
show up. I have not used the rsop.msc. Is that something to run on the
client computer when the problem ocurs. I am looking at it on my server now
and it looks like it is for the currently logged in user. The first time I
had this problem, I thought it was the size of the My Documents because it
happened to one of my trouble users. He had probably about 10 Gig in his
folder and was always messing around. I figured it was just him messing
around. I created a share folder for him to move all his junk, and the
problem still existed. Then I just added a new user that had less than 20
meg, and having the same issue. I will be looking through the rsop.msc to
see what I can find.

It's Resultant Set of Policy - and is something to run on a machine when you
are troubleshooting GPO errors.

That could be a possibility, yes.

Personally, to me this sounds like an excellent reason to avoid the bugs of
offline files. There are alternatives for your laptop users, you know - you
just have to do some creative group policy work.
