I have a home network with two computers connected with a netgear switch.
This morning one of the two could not connect to the internet. I first tried
switching the cable locations on the switch which did nothing. Then I
connected the internet cable directly into the computer. I still cannot get
it to connect. In uninstalled the internet card's drivers and restarted the
computer. Still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Lost Home Network connection

Ken:

Did you check to see if you have an activity light on on the switch and
ethernet card?

Check all / any firewall / anti-virus softwares.

Reset the network protocol stack. I have successfully used
"winsockxpfix.exe."

Yes, both lights are working

Did you see if you could ping your gateway? It could a bad ethernet card or
cable, we get a lot of surges where I am at, so I am forever replacing
ethernet cards. Do you get your IP's through DHCP?

Re: Lost Home Network connection

Ken
Try this:
Open a run command by clicking Start >> Run >. type in the input box these
command one at a time and click [OK]
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot the machine in question, does it connect?

Or try this winsock fix from here:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
Execute and it will prompt you to restart your machine, please do so and see
if that will help?
If it doesn't then what the last thing happen on this computer like new
software installed/updates recently..etc.
Let us know.

Re: Lost Home Network connection

A gateway is the IP Address where all Internet traffic is routed to. In
diagnosing a network issue you have to verify PC to Access device &
then Access device to Internet. Your gateway will either be the IP of
the Router or the Broadband modem.

To perform a Ping:
Click Start, Run (Type) Cmd [Enter]
Click inside the Command Prompt box to give it focus
>Ping 192.168.1.1

^ Use your Gateway address
Ping will return statistics, if Ping works % Loss will equal 0% loss
You start by Ping'ing your gateway if that works, then you ping a
Internet site that accepts Ping traffic ( DslReports.Com does ).

Re: Lost Home Network connection

Ok, no problem, first click on Start->Run and type in cmd and hit enter. A
black box should pop up. Then type in ipconfig /all, this should have all
of your network configurations. Look for the done that says "Default
Gateway" it should be something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Then type in "ping
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" with out the quotes and using the Default Gateway IP
address and hit enter, then you should see "Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:
bytes=32 time=<1ms ttl=128" or something close to that. if you get a
"Request timed out" or "Destination host unreachable", it could be the TCP
stack is trashed, or bad configs or a bad ethernet card (resetting the TCP
stack should be used as a last resort).

There is no entry on the Default Gateway line. It is blank. WHen I type in
ipconfig /release nothing happens. There is no response.

I type in the ipconfig /flushdns and I got a subsequent command prompt. I
typed in ipconfig /renew and nothing happened. I tried ipconfig /all and
found that there is no default gateway entry.

Re: Lost Home Network connection

Hmmm, I suspect you may have a bad ethernet card ... you may want to try
resetting the winsock layer before you go running out to buy another
ethernet card. You could use the automated program for that WinSock XP Fix,
here is the link:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Just be careful with it though.

Machine and also the same time for the Limited connectivity machine.
On the Local Area Connection Properties under General click to highlight
this option:
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on properties Button.
On the Internet Protocol (TCP/..) properties under general make sure the
machine is fetting an Auto IP address and DNS.
Click on Advanced Buton and compare the settings between machines.

Re: Lost Home Network connection

I rebooted the FIOS router a second time and this time it appears to have
corrected the problem. I can now access the internet from both computers.
However, computer A cannot access computer B. But Computer B can access
computer A. WHen I try to access computer B from computer A I get a message
saying that access is denied. THey are both on the same workgroup. I can
see computer B from A. Any ideas?

Re: Lost Home Network connection

I rebooted the FIOS router a second time and this time it appears to have
corrected the problem. I can now access the internet from both computers.
However, computer A cannot access computer B. But Computer B can access
computer A. WHen I try to access computer B from computer A I get a message
saying that access is denied. THey are both on the same workgroup. I can
see computer B from A. Any ideas?
